On May 22, 2021, RM/Sotheby's will finally hold a live auction with an auctioneer again. The event will take place on Amelia Island. 100 cars with an average age of 56.5 years will be available. 41 percent of them will be offered without a reserve price. The estimated values range from USD 15,000 to USD 4 million, with an average of USD 407,575.
12 Porsches, 9 Ferraris and 8 Mercedes-Benz lead the brand contingents, but there are also cars from long-forgotten brands such as Cord, Swallow and Winton for sale, and there are also plenty of racing cars.
The Duesenberg is the most valuable
The most highly valued car at the auction is a 1929 Duesenberg Model J with an estimate of USD 3.5 to 4 million.
The car with chassis number 2199 was named "Best in Class" winner at the Amelia Concours in 2020 and was completely restored not too long ago.
A fifth of pre-war vehicles
With 22 cars, the pre-war fraction is well represented.
For example, a Benz Patent Motor Car from 1866 (as a replica and for USD 60,000 to 80,000 with no minimum bid), as well as a 16-cylinder Cadillac and a Mercedes-Benz 500 K Three Position Roadster from 1935 (USD 1 to 1.5 million). The majority of the pre-war classics are of American origin.
Several Ferrari super classics
The eight/nine Ferrari classics alone (including a Dino) were estimated at around USD 13 million, including a Ferrari 275 GTB/4 from 1968 (USD 2.5 to 2.8 million), an F50 from 1995 (USD 3.4 to 3.75 million), an F40 with minimal mileage from 1992 (USD 1.8 to 2.2 million) and a 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1971 (USD 2.25 to 2.75 million).
Many Americans
With six Cadillacs, five Chryslers, four Chevrolets and four Fords, as well as several other US car brands with other vehicles, the USA is certainly one of the best-represented carmaking nations.
Two Shelby Cobras will certainly attract a lot of interest.
DTM tributes
Among the eight Mercedes, there are two cars that bring back memories of previous DTM seasons.
A 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II is on offer for USD 350,000 to 400,000.
A CLK DTM from 2005 is expected to fetch USD 325,000 to 375,000.
Super classics
Of course, the usual super classics that frequently appear at auctions are not missing.
A Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1958 (USD 800,000 to 1 million) is on offer, as is a Maserati Ghibli 4.7 from 1967 (USD 160,000 to 200,000).
There is also a whole armada of Porsche sports cars, including a 1994 Speedster (USD 150,000 to 175,000).
The exotic
The Tiger version of the Messerschmitt, usually called the F.M.R. Tg 500, has also been sold for USD 300,000, but in Amelia Island there is an example from 1958 for sale for USD 125,000 to 165,000, whereby the four-wheeled cabin scooter is offered without a minimum price.
Also rare is the Swallow Doretti, a pretty convertible based on the technology of the Triumph TR3. The sports car is said to cost between USD 110,000 and 140,000.
The Sunbeam Alpine as a Harrington Coupé from 1961 is likely to be similarly rare. The estimate given here is USD 75,000 to 100,000.
And if that's still too much for an exotic, you should perhaps take a look at the Ferves Ranger from 1968, for which USD 40,000 to 50,000 (with no reserve price) is expected.
The racing version of the Porsche 924 can also be counted among the exotics. A 924 Carrera GTR from 1981 is on offer for USD 375,000 to 450,000. However, the list of exotic and rare vehicles at RM in Amelia is considerably longer ...
