One-make auctions are "en vogue", as they bring together a manageable but highly interested auction audience. The English auction house Silverstone Auctions cannot escape this trend either and is putting 58 Porsche sports cars under the hammer on October 25, 2015. Around 4 million pounds (5.5 million euros, CHF 5.9 million) are expected to be realized, with each Porsche expected to change hands for an average of around 73,000 pounds (99,000 euros, CHF 108,000).
Just above this average value is a left-hand drive Porsche 911 S from 1974 with 9571 miles on the clock. Unrestored and completely original, this early G-model is certainly a rarity.
911 dominance
You could almost have been invited to the 911-only auction in "The Wing" within the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, because the 911 variants actually make up the bulk of the offer.
Only four 356s, two 914s, one 924 S, one 928 S4, one 944 S2 Cabriolet and one Boxter S 550 Anniversary are the exceptions to the 911 dominance, if you also include the single 912 in the 911 category.
Around half of the Porsches have already reached the classic car age of 30 years, the rest are more recent, including a total of three GT2 and six GT3 models of more recent date.
Twice flat-body
Two of the famous flat-body 911 Turbo models from the 50 cars produced for Great Britain will go under the hammer at Silverstone. One car is the press car from 1985, which is now expected to cost £150,000 to £170,000.
The other car is believed to be the last of the 50 UK models and dates from 1989. It is now also said to be worth £150,000 to £170,000 as an SE model (with 330 hp and G50 five-speed gearbox).
Originals and replicas
The prices that Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 models have achieved in recent years are legendary. Silverstone Auctions also has an original RS on offer, which is even one of the first 500 examples produced in 1972, which benefited from a particularly large number of lightweight parts. An estimate of £ 375,000 to £ 425,000 was made for the chassis 9113600235, which seems quite moderate in view of the obviously largely original condition (apart from the paintwork, which was probably originally signal yellow).
If you don't have half a million in your bank account, you might also be happy with a left-hand drive replica, especially as the differences between a late original RS and the 911 models produced in parallel were not really huge. In any case, a complete M491 conversion based on a German 911 chassis from 1973 is available at Silverstone for £80,000 to £90,000. With a three-liter engine and around 240 hp, it should certainly be fun.
A little further away from the original, but visually almost indistinguishable, is another RS conversion based on a 911 3.2 from 1986, which is now looking for a new owner for £28,000 to £32,000.
A very special 914
Among the many 911s, the two 914s hardly stand out, especially as they are not the particularly sought-after six-cylinder models. However, one of the two 914s is certainly worth a second look, as it is rare for such an elaborately restored example to come under the hammer.
£ 20,000 to £ 24,000 is a confident estimate for the left-hand drive 914 from 1974, which was restored by Arie Luyendyk, the Indianapolis winner, and has since been protected in several collections.
Predominantly, but not exclusively, right-hand drive
Typically for an auction in the middle of Great Britain, the majority of the vehicles are right-hand drive and therefore of less interest to continental Europeans. However, potential bidders looking for a car for the racetrack may well be interested in a RHD example. And as many as 13 vehicles (around 22% of the offer) have the steering wheel on the left-hand side and offer themselves as a potential bargain, because for the British themselves, the right-hand drive cars are of course more interesting. In any case, the LHD vehicles have been marked in the following table.
The auction catalog can be browsed online and all offers are documented on the Silverstone Auctions website.
All vehicles on offer
The following table shows all the Porsche sports cars on offer with estimated prices in British pounds, euros and Swiss francs. The conversion was carried out using current daily exchange rates (£1 = €1.36, £1 = CHF 1.47). Cars without a minimum price are marked with "NoR" and have no estimated price. Cars with left-hand drive are marked with "LHD" in the vehicle designation. All data without guarantee.
The table can be sorted as desired by clicking on the column headings.
