The Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) and Vintage Racing Events (VRE) organizations are joining forces to stage a major, promising sensation: a 24-hour race for historic racing cars on the legendary Daytona race track. The event is scheduled for November 12-16, 2014.
Five days of racing action
The event aims to commemorate the glory days that began in Daytona in 1968, the year of its birth.
Vehicles that once raced at Daytona are eligible for the race. Corresponding race fields separate the different eras, from 1968 to 2010: six groups have been announced, which will race four times for one hour each (similar to Le Mans Classic).
So that the big preparations are not just for the 24 hours, the event will be extended to 5 days so that visitors really have time to enjoy the racing cars, drivers and the whole atmosphere.
Racing history of Daytona
Daytona's racing history began even before the first 24-hour race, in 1962, when Dan Gurney won the 3-hour race in a Lotus-Climax 19B for the Arciero Brothers team.
We published a comprehensive description of Daytona's racing history in our main article on the 50th anniversary with 140 photos.
