Mecum will be auctioning off around 4,200 cars in Kissimmee from January 7 to 19, 2025. For years, car collectors have been making the pilgrimage to Florida in January to get their hands on a special car for the spring.
Only some of the cars are genuine classics, but every year Mecum manages to find some highly exciting rarities and preferably put them under the hammer on the second weekend.
Steve McQueen's Porsche 917 K
The highlight will undoubtedly be the Porsche 917 K from 1969, which is painted in the Gulf colors as seen in Steve McQueen's film, when it belonged to the production company Solar Productions. The car later passed through various hands, including Reinhold Joest, Brian Redman, Richard Attwood, Frank Gallogly and Jerry Seinfeld.
Steve McQueen bought chassis 917-022 directly from the factory to use it as the main character in his movie "Le Mans". However, the car was subsequently also used in real racing events and was driven by Jo Siffert, among others. Mecum does not give an estimated value for this car, but you don't need to be a prophet to dream of eight-figure sums.
In addition to the 917K, a Porsche 910 from 1966, once driven by Niki Lauda, and a Porsche 934 from 1976 are also up for grabs.
American racing cars
Several Shelby 427s come under the hammer in Kissimmee.
The 1966 Ford GT40 with chassis number 1034 will also be auctioned as a "Road Car".
Various fast Chevrolet Corvettes, a selection of five Plymouth Superbirds and Indianapolis racing cars will also go under the hammer.
300 SL quartet
Traditionally less well represented at Mecum are the super classics from Europe.
Among the more than 4000 cars, however, there are a few gems, including four 300 SLs, two gullwing models and two roadsters with estimated prices of around USD 2 million.
Rare Ferrari and Lamborghini super sports cars
The selection of sought-after Ferrari and Lamborghini sports cars is comparatively large.
Two Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spiders will go under the hammer, as well as a 275 GTB/4 from 1967.
There is also a Ferrari F40 from 1992, as well as models such as the 330 GTC, the Dino 246 GT/S, the Testarossa, the 250 GT/L and the 400 Superamerica Coupé Aerodinamico from 1963.
The 212 Inter as a 2+2 Berlina from 1951 (estimated value USD 500,000 to 600,000) should be something for real fans.
Lamborghin fans might be interested in the two Miura P400 S from 1969 and 1970, while collectors of classic Maserati cars in Kissimmee will not get their money's worth.
