The ADAM Encheres auction on January 20, 2019 had already generated a lot of press coverage in the run-up to the event. It's not every day that rare classics from the car graveyard come under the hammer.
The "collection" was thanks to Henry Ruggieri(we had reported on it). Over decades, he bought a fairly diverse selection of cars, which he did not drive, but simply stored somewhere on his land. There they became overgrown and immobile. Ruggieri also removed an essential part each time to ensure that the cars were not stolen.
Now the collector has passed away and the more than 80 cars are to be sold.
To do this, the Adam Encheres auction house first had to free them from their natural prison, transport them to a hall and document them. It turned out that the cars had naturally suffered considerably in their last storage location.
Miura wreck for over half a million
The 1968 Lamborghini Miura, for example, which Ruggieri bought in 1968, had considerable rust spots and will require an extensive complete restoration if it is to be driven on the road again.
The specialists had entered EUR 400,000 to 600,000 as the estimated value. In fact, the highest bidder, who is said to be from Switzerland, paid EUR 560,000 (CHF 637,000) for the restoration base.
Early E-Type for almost EUR 100,000
Similarly sought after was a 1961 Jaguar E-Type, an early flat-floor coupé with chassis number 885070, which Ruggieri had already purchased in 1970. Apart from a missing center console and the uninstalled dynamo, the car appeared to be reasonably complete.
The highest bid was listed at EUR 99,000, more than double what was expected.
An early Porsche 356 was also sold for a surprisingly high price.
EUR 48,000 was a proud bid, especially compared to the moderate estimate, for a car that is missing many parts and largely destroyed by residual decay.
Impressive variety
The breadth of the 81 cars on offer was impressive, with the majority going to new owners for three- and four-digit amounts, including a Renault 4 CV, a Lancia Flaminia Berline, a Simca Coupé de Ville, two Lincoln Continental, a Panhard & Levasor Type X 69 and a Hotchkiss Type J.A.G. Grégoire.
