In 2015, the Grossglockner Grand Prix celebrates its 80th birthday, and the revival of the old races from September 24 - 26, 2015 promises to be correspondingly exciting.
The International Grossglockner Hill Climb Races were already the measure of all things in 1935, 1938 and 1939. They have been taking place again in the form of regularity races since 2012.
Successful revival
In 2012, a brave group of vehicle owners came together to conquer the Grossglockner again from the Ferleiten toll station to the Fuscher Törl. As in the historic races of 1935, 1938 and 1939, 92 bends, 14 hairpin bends and 14 kilometers as well as more than 1200 meters in altitude were to be conquered. From the paddock in Ferleiten at an altitude of 1150 m, the route climbed up to 2428 m to the Fuscher Törl.
This route was also used in the historic races for the "Grand Mountain Prize" of Austria when the road was completely closed. With extensive support from the road operator and the authorities, it is actually possible to close an almost 14-kilometer-long pass road for the revival so that the pass belongs to the classics.
It is the authentic route of the pre-war "International Grossglockner Hill Climb". Austria's highest mountain with the legendary pass road was the venue for the mountain races just one day after the Grossglockner High Alpine Road was opened on August 4, 1935.
In 2015, the event celebrates 80 years of the road and 80 years of racing at the foot of the impressive Grossglockner massif in the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The revival has already taken place three times since 2012, attracting many spectators and fans of the old races with historic racing cars and breathtaking atmospheres.
The starting cars included a Mercedes-Benz W 125, which Herrmann Lang had driven to victory in the 1939 Grossglockner Race, a Porsche Panamericana Spyder with Hans Herrmann at the wheel and a wide variety of pre-war racing cars from Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, ERA, Bentley and Alfa Romeo. But the unforgettable VW Beetle also tackled the hill again.
For the fourth time
Fusch an der Grossglockner Strasse - authentic and original - now attracts visitors to the 4th revival on the mountain - the "International Grossglockner Grand Prix" - for the 7th Grossglockner Motorsport Event. Grossglockner motorsport event since the road was opened and the "Grand Prix of Austria" in 2015! From September 24 - 26, 2015, it's "Drive the Challenge!" And this year 2015 is a very special year due to the big anniversary.
An impressive field of participants
There is hardly any other event in mainland Europe with such a large pre-war field. 78 cars up to and including 1940 are registered, plus a further 29 selected vehicles from later years.
There are many rarities among the participating vehicles that are not to be missed, e.g. a Bugatti T13 Brescia, a Rally NGP or the Lagonda M 45 Rapide Le Mans team car. Your mouth will be watering right from the start. So let's head to the Grossglockner on September 24, 2015!
Further information can be found on the event website.
