As part of Monterey Car Week in California, Gooding will once again be auctioning off a large number of valuable collector vehicles on August 19 and 20, 2022. The offer includes 156 cars and two motorcycles with an estimated total value of 144 to 180 million dollars. On average, this results in an estimated price of a good million dollars per lot. Despite an average age of 52 years, the proportion of pre-war vehicles is comparatively high at 27.
Pre-war cars are the most expensive
The field of veterans at least 80 years old also includes the three most expensive lots of the auction. At the top is a 1937 Bugatti 57 SC Atalante, which according to Gooding is one of the best preserved examples and is said to still have its first engine and gearbox.
Classically finished in black with a brown interior, the coupé is expected to fetch between ten and twelve million US dollars.
Another Bugatti Type 57 from 1937 is already available for around a tenth of the price. The unrestored Ventoux, which was delivered new to Prince William of Sweden, is also still equipped with the original drivetrain and is expected to fetch between one and 1.5 million dollars.
The two second most expensive cars in the auction, at seven to nine million dollars each, are two Bentley sports cars: a 4 1/2 liter "Blower" Sports Tourer from 1930 and an 8 liter Sports Tourer one year younger.
High expectations
In general, the price level in Monterey is very high. Only 13 cars have a maximum estimated price of less than 100,000 dollars. Those interested in a 1967 VW Beetle would have to have the least cash in their pockets, although at USD 30,000-40,000 it is again quite expensive for a Dunkholm car.
The same applies to the 1975 Mercedes-Benz 280 C in the less desirable US version, whose estimate of USD 35,000 to 45,000 is put into perspective by its low mileage of 36,000 miles.
The estimates for the three Jaguar E-Types on offer are strikingly high. The most expensive of them was estimated at USD 600,000 to 700,000. The gray coupé with red interior is one of only 20 left-hand drive examples with external hood locks. Ironically, the vehicle description begins with a quote from Sir William Lyons: "You don't have to be rich to drive a Jaguar".
Only slightly less expensive is the 1961 Cabriolet for USD 500,000 to 600,000. The hood of the green 3.8-liter with light brown interior is also unlocked from the outside. In contrast, the dark red '63 Coupé for USD 250,000 to 300,000 seems almost like a bargain. Until 2014, the car was owned by the new buyer in Oregon, who only drove it 34,000 miles in all those years.
Many Porsche sports and racing cars
With 35 cars, the Porsche brand has by far the largest share of lots. Worth mentioning here is the 1958 356 1500 GS/GT Carrera Speedster. The silver roadster with aluminum body is expected to fetch USD 1,400,000 to 1,800,000.
The hot Fuhrmann engine clearly makes the difference here. As an ordinary 1600, another Speedster from 1956 is estimated at "only" USD 375,000 to 450,000, although it wears the more attractive color combination in red with beige interior.
The most expensive Porsche, however, is likely to be the 2007 RS Spyder Evo. The racing car in the familiar DHL livery was used by Team Penske in the American Le Mans Series and was estimated at USD 6,000,000 to 8,000,000.
The 911 Carrera RS Sport from 1973 in rare sea blue provides a beautiful color contrast. The new example delivered to France is said to be worth between USD 1,750,000 and 2,250,000.
Away from the big brands
For around a tenth of this price, you can get the Japanese counterpart: the 1971 Nissan Skyline H/T 2000 GT-R, which is now also very well-known and sought-after here thanks to video games. The gray coupé was in the care of its first owner in Tokyo until 2017 and, according to Gooding, is in excellent original condition. It is said to be worth between USD 225,000 and 275,000 to bidders.
And yet another media celebrity is coming under the hammer in Monterey: the original 1951 Hudson Hornet, which Disney Pixar used to promote its movie "Cars". The blue Club Coupé bears the correct racing lettering from the film, including a matching license plate, and was signed on the sun visors by director John Lasseter and voice actor Paul Newman. Movie buffs should have between USD 90,000 and 120,000 to spare for this unique piece.
Ferrari non-stop
Anyone who wants to build up a new Ferrari collection has the chance to add 20 vehicles to it in Monterey. Among them are the superlatives of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s: the F40, F50 and Enzo Ferrari with exceptionally low mileages. The 1990 F40 in US version with thick rubber bumpers has just 1832 miles and is expected to fetch USD 2,750,00 to 3,250,000.
The F50, on the other hand, is almost a long runner with just under 6200 miles since 1995, but with an estimated price of USD 4,500,000-5,500,000 it is still considerably more expensive. Unlike the previous two, the 2004 Enzo Ferrari is silver instead of red. Its 2730 miles are said to be worth USD 3,500,000 to 4,000,000.
For fans of the fifties and sixties, however, some other Ferraris might be more exciting, as the Gooding selection includes rarities such as the Ferrari 166 MM from 1959, a 500 Mondial Spider from 1954, a 400 Superamerica Series1 Coupé Aerodinamico from 1961 and a 275 GTS from 1966. All of these sports cars will have to be gold-plated for seven figures.
Another super sports car from the nineties that is rapidly increasing in value is the Bugatti EB 110.
Gooding is offering a 1994 example in Super Sport version, which the experts have estimated at USD 3,000,000 to 3,500,000.
Wide range of Mercedes
Among the 13 Mercedes-Benzes on offer, three 280 SLs from 1970 and 1971 stand out in particular, which are also surprisingly expensive with estimated prices of between USD 140,000 and 220,000. However, this is no comparison to the 1964 230 SL, for which even Gooding did not dare to commit to an estimate. "Over a million dollars," it says only vaguely.
The reason: it is a one-off with a Pininfarina body designed by Tom Tjaarda. The lines will meet with fans and opponents, so it will be interesting to see how expensive this interesting coupé will be.
The Chevrolet Corvair Coupé Speciale from 1960 is a much cheaper way to get your hands on a Tjaarda special body. The red two-door car, which looks somewhat casually like a mixture of a Ferrari 330 GT and a VW 411, comes from the Pininfarina collection, is one of two examples built and, according to experts, is worth USD 300,000 to 500,000.
The Maserati 5000 GT Indianapolis from 1961 is a "semi-unique piece", which largely corresponds to the regular Allemano models, but differs from them in details. The example offered by Gooding is the one shown in the brochure at the time and was estimated at USD 1,300,000 to 1,600,000.
Further information and many pictures can be found on the Gooding & Co. website.
