In the run-up to the Concours d'Elegance, Gooding will be auctioning 145 automobiles on March 7 on Amelia Island with a total estimated value of between 75 and 97 million US dollars. In addition to numerous Porsches and Ferraris as well as some pre-war vehicles, several rarities from AMG will also go under the hammer.
Hammer time
The most interesting of these are certainly the two 300 E 6.0s - now better known by their US nickname "Hammer". Already not exactly bulk goods, the anthracite gray coupé and the blue-black saloon are said to be the only ones of their kind with a manual five-speed transmission instead of a four-speed automatic. This uniqueness comes at a price: The four-door has been estimated at 1.25 to 1.75 million US dollars, the two-door at 1.5 to 2 million.
In view of this, the 300 TE 3.4-24 AMG also on offer for "only" 90,000 to 120,000 dollars seems to be a bargain, although it is also equipped with the coveted five-speed manual transmission. The fourth AMG in the catalog is a C 43 from 1999 for 60,000 to 80,000 dollars. Although it has an automatic transmission, it comes in the unique special color "Lapis Blue".
Even the two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs - a roadster and a coupé for 1.1 to 1.4 and 1.3 to 1.5 million dollars respectively - are likely to pale a little in the shadow of the two manual gearshift hammers. The brand with the three-pointed star is therefore likely to be represented by four entries in the 25-car club of million-dollar lots.
Ferrari has just as many. Only Porsche - if you include the two Ruf derivatives - has one more millionaire to offer and once again has the largest share of the Amelia portfolio with a total of 28 (or 30) cars. The most expensive lot is also possibly a former Porsche: no maximum estimate has been given for the Ruf CTR.
Only a minimum value of six million dollars has been estimated for the "Yellowbird". It is therefore quite possible that the yellow bird will even outbid the Ferrari 375 MM Berlinetta, which is estimated at eight to ten million dollars.
A lot of pre-war
With 31 lots, the range of pre- and pre-war vehicles is also quite extensive. The treasures among them include a Duesenberg Model J with Franay body ($1.7-1.9 million) and a Bentley 8 Litre Sports Tourer with Vanden-Plas body ($1.5-2 million) as well as one of only three surviving Voisin C25 Aérodyne. The black and yellow sedan, which last spent 45 years in the same collection, is expected to fetch $2-2.5 million.
The Peugeot 402 Darl'mat Spécial Sport and the Bugatti Type 50 Roadster, the only representatives of their respective brands, remain just under to well under the million dollar mark at 800,000 to 900,000 dollars and 500,000 to 600,000 dollars respectively.
On the other hand, the over-80-year-old veterans also represent some of the most affordable cars in the auction, such as a '34 Ford V-8 Fordor ($ 20,000-30,000), a Buick Model 10 or a Ford Model T ($ 30,000-40,000 each). On average, the cars on offer are 62 years old, spread over a range from 1902 (Rambler Model C Runabout, $70,000-90,000) to 2014 (Ferrari 458 Speciale, $575,000-650,000).
Straight ahead at full throttle
One of the curiosities in the catalog is certainly the Ferrari 550 Maranello, which was built as a record-breaking car for the Bonneville Salt Flats. At 354 km/h, it clearly exceeded the top speed specified by the factory (320 km/h). Between 140,000 and 180,000 dollars are expected for the 538 bhp (545 hp) V12 coupé.
For those who prefer a more classic look: the '67 Corvette Sting Ray in lightly scrubbed "Sunfire Yellow" has only covered 9800 miles (15,800 km), but most of them under full throttle on the quarter mile.
Special Porsche
Anyone browsing through the catalog by name only, but without any accompanying pictures, could easily overlook the Porsche 356 B with Beutler bodywork, because contrary to the usual practices of auction houses, which tend to write too much rather than too little, its coachbuilder is not mentioned in the vehicle name at all. The ivory-colored coupé has been sold new in the USA and is expected to fetch between 300,000 and 400,000 dollars on Amelia Island.
With the Fiat 8V, however, this restraint is understandable and commendable. Estimated at between 1 and 1.4 million dollars, the coupé wears the factory bodywork.
The difference a small addition to the name can make is demonstrated by the four Porsche 911s from the 993 series: as Carrera and Turbo, they are expected to fetch 140,000 to 180,000 and 300,000 to 350,000 dollars respectively. As Carrera S and Turbo S, they are expected to fetch considerably more at 250,000 to 300,000 and 550,000 to 650,000 dollars respectively.
