No sooner have we become accustomed to a new price level than the next record is reported. A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO is said to have just changed hands privately for USD 52 million (EUR 38.4 million or CHF 47.6 million).
It is probably no coincidence that it is a Ferrari 250 GTO that currently holds the price record for the most expensive car in the world. And the car in question was not just any GTO either. After all, chassis 5111GT won the 1963 Tour de France under Guichet / Behra.
Whether one of the 39 GTOs built at the time has to be the most expensive car in the world is a good question, because although almost every sports car built by Scaglietti is unique and more or less different from its siblings, one could assume that there are even rarer, more elaborate and historically more interesting cars than the 5111GT.
Obviously, however, collectors are keen to have one of the 12-cylinder front-engined sports cars in the hall ...
