On the gravel lot yesterday and already a collector's item today - it can happen that quickly. Some people for whom even the almost 40-year-old Mercedes-Benz W124 is still a youngtimer will rub their eyes in amazement at some of the offers at the current Catawiki auction of young classics (until April 26, 2023, 9:00 p.m.). But even the first BMW X5 is now over 20 years old and therefore in its prime as a youngtimer. That's why there are two of the Bavarian SUV debutants among the 28 cars on offer.
Young and expensive
Built in 2006, the BMW M5 of the E60 model with the five-liter V10 is the youngest vehicle in the field, although it has already arrived much earlier in the enthusiast scene. The US version of the high-performance sedan, black on the outside and inside, is expected to cost between 31,500 and 34,750 euros.
Only the Porsche Boxster S from 2000, whose livery is based on that of the Dempsey Proton racing cars, is more expensive. The roadster with the 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine was estimated at 35,500 to 39,500 euros in the run-up to the auction.
This means that the graphically bold Porsche and the high-revving BMW are the two price outliers in the range. The rest of the range is - in some cases significantly - under 20,000 euros. The Volvo C70 from 1999 ranks right at the bottom, with an unusually wide estimated price range of 2000 to 5000 euros.
Lots of Jaguar, even more Mercedes-Benz
The Jaguar X-Type 2.5 V6 from 2002 is a little more precisely defined in terms of price, but no more expensive. 4500 to 5000 euros are expected for the silver all-wheel-drive saloon. The English brand with the South American big cat is the second most represented in the auction catalog with five cars.
Only Mercedes-Benz ranks higher with six models, half of which are from the popular 124 model series. With the saloon (260 E, 1992, 7200-7950 euros), Estate (E 200 T, 1995, 11,000-12,250 euros) and Coupé (230 CE, 1990, 10,500-12,000 euros), almost the entire range of the successful long-running model is represented.
The missing W124 Cabriolet is replaced by three other open-top Daimler models: an SLK (200 Kompressor, 2001, 9400-11,000 euros), a CLK (230 Kompressor, 2000, 9000-10,000 euros) and an SL (300 SL, 1992, 16,500-18,500 euros) are on offer at this youngtimer auction by Catawiki.
Three small hot hatches and a convertible
The range of compact sports coupés is particularly interesting. The 220 hp Fiat Coupé 20V Tubro from 1999 for 9500 to 10,500 euros is almost the most "ordinary" of the three speedsters. The Alfa Romeo GTV 2.0 V6 TB is an almost equally powerful alternative. The unusually small six-cylinder engine was boosted to 201 hp with a turbocharger for the Italian market and is estimated at between 10,500 and 12,000 euros.
The Renault 19 16V from 1991 is a real rarity. The estimate of 13,300 to 15,500 euros is surprising at first, but is put into perspective by its apparently excellent condition. Judging by the series of pictures in the advertisement, the 135-horsepower poison dwarf has been extensively restored and repaired.
Bargain hunters may be interested in the Opel Kadett 1.6i Cabrio, also built in 1991. The pearl blue convertible has reportedly only covered 37,000 kilometers and is said to cost between 6750 and 7500 euros.
