Bonhams' Paris auction was actually planned to take place on the Thursday of Rétromobile week as usual. However, with the postponement of the classic car show, Bonhams managers had to look for a new solution and found it in an online-only auction called "Les Grandes Marcques du Monde à Paris", which will bring 74 vehicles (plus a boat and a children's car) under the virtual hammer from March 3 to 10, 2021.
Together, the vehicle lots, which are on average 48 years old, are worth EUR 7.3 million, i.e. EUR 98,632 per vehicle lot. 15 percent of the vehicles are being offered without a reserve price, six of which are two-wheelers. Of particular interest are the five miniature Hondas (of the Monkey and Co type), which are sure to attract considerable interest.
Porsche in the lead
In terms of cars, the Porsche brand dominates with nine vehicles, followed by Citroën with seven and Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari with six cars each.
The pre-war segment is represented by four cars, while there are a good dozen youngtimers and neoclassics.
Seven Citroëns
The selection of Citroëns is extensive - after all, the auction is associated with Paris.
There is a Citroën 2 CV Charleston from 1985 (EUR 15,000 to 20,000) and a Citroën DS23 Pallas from 1973 (EUR 55,000 to 75,000).
Anyone looking for an SM will find a selection of two coupés in the EUR 40,000 to 60,000 price range.
And there are even two CXs from 1975 and 1979 on offer, which are looking for a new owner in the EUR 15,000 to 30,000 price range.
And the highlight is the DS21 convertible from 1971, for which EUR 150,000 to 250,000 has been set.
French specialties
The other French brands are less well represented, but there are some interesting splashes of color. One of these is the Salmson GSS Sports Tourer from 1926. This lightweight and charming 1920s sports car with chassis number 99 was once delivered to England and has an extensively documented history.
The small car was restored a few years ago and is now looking for a new owner for EUR 100,000 to 140,000.
The A110s from Alpine-Renault are also rare. On offer is a model 1600 SX from 1976, which was restored in 2006/2007 and rebuilt for historic rallying. EUR 90,000 to 120,000 is the estimate.
Of the approximately 105 Peugeot 402 Darl'Mat Roadsters/Coupés/Cabriolets built, only 30 are said to have survived, one of which is going under the hammer "in Paris" as chassis number 400233 from 1938. Despite its extensive history, there is a lot that has remained partially unknown. The magnificent car will now be offered for EUR 350,000 to 550,000.
Some super classics
Many super classics that have usually enriched Bonhams' Paris offerings are conspicuous by their absence in the 2021 online version, but they are not completely absent.
There are two Jaguar E-Type Series 1s for sale, a Maserati 3500 GT from 1960 (EUR 170,000 to 200,000), an Aston Martin DB4 Series II from 1960 (EUR 450,000 to 600,000) and a Ferrari 512 BBi from 1987 (EUR 160,000 to 200,000).
Exotic
Only 99 Gordon Keeble Coupés were built in the early 1960s, designed by Giorgio Giugiaro, who worked for Bertone at the time. With V8 power and a lightweight plastic body, the car was a sports car to be taken seriously.
One of the few surviving examples, once owned by the British ambassador to America, is now being auctioned for EUR 90,000 to 120,000. And the fact that Jackie Kennedy once sat behind the wheel, documented in photographs, shouldn't hurt.
Slightly less rare than the Gordon Keeble is the Lotus Elite, of which 1030 were built. On offer is a Series 2 Coupé from 1961, equipped with a 1.4-liter Climax engine. Estimates range from EUR 85,000 to 125,000.
The 1990 Opel Lotus Omega, the second oldest example in LHD configuration, benefited from the engineering work of the same company and went under the hammer for EUR 60,000 to 80,000. Only 950 were built and the car on offer was originally delivered to Germany.
The Fiat 131 Racing from 1979 is probably a rarity today, even if not in terms of the original production numbers. Thanks to its Lampredi twin-camshaft four-cylinder engine and five-speed gearbox, the car was a serious sports saloon at the time. It is now priced at EUR 20,000 to 30,000, although some remaining work still awaits the buyer.
The VW Golf Country Syncro 4x4 from 1990 was also a special feature at the time. Raised and built in small numbers, it certainly stands out today. With only 35,000 km on the clock, the French delivery did not travel very far and is now expected to find a new owner for EUR 10,000 to 20,000.
More information and many pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the Bonhams website, where there are of course also bidding instructions.
