The Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Members Meeting is already a cherished tradition, but after the motorsport event itself was canceled, it was expected that the Bonhams auction would also be postponed. However, the Bonhams organizers initially wanted to hold on to the auction.
In the end, however, the decision was made to cancel the auction.
The lots are still for sale and interested parties are invited to contact the Bonhams UK Motor Car Department on +44 (0) 20 7468 5801 or by email.
Diverse range
On average, the 81 vehicles on offer are 56 years old. The total value was estimated at almost £10 million, so around £121,000 per vehicle is expected. Really expensive vehicles are missing.
37 brands are represented, Jaguar with 9, Ferrari with 8 and Mercedes-Benz with 6 vehicles. The other manufacturers are mostly represented by one or two cars. Typical of the Goodwood auction is the large proportion of racing and racing sports cars, many of which have already competed on the Goodwood circuit.
17 pre-war vehicles
The proportion of pre-war vehicles is comparatively high, accounting for around a fifth of the vehicles.
Here you will find cars from the brands Talbot, Rolls-Royce, Hispano-Suiza, Frazer Nash, Riley, Alvis, Hotchkiss, Lagonda and Bentley, to name just a few examples.
The rare Rosengart
The cheapest car in the whole range is a 1936 Rosengart LR4 N2 Coupé, which is by no means a ruin or an object of restoration, as this rare car is actually said to be roadworthy. It dates from the time when Lucien Rosengart began building cars and used an Austin Seven license to do so. As an engineer, however, he naturally made some improvements.
Estimated at just £5000 to £7000 for the little sports car, this would definitely be an affordable entry into the pre-war world.
The special Frazer-Nash Boulogne Super Sport
A very special Frazer Nash will probably be somewhat more expensive. This is chassis 1118 from 1927, which once left the factory with an Anzani-Boulogne body. It was later converted into a saloon, but this body was destroyed in the war, so a Supersport body was then constructed.
The car is known to have been extensively maintained and repaired, which is reflected in the estimate of £140,000 to £180,000.
A Healey with plastic bodywork
In the sixties, many an Austin-Healey was fitted with a plastic body, for example by Fiberfab. This included a three-liter Healey that was fitted with a Jamaican body in the USA. A few years ago, the car was shipped to the UK and then extensively restored. The engine is now said to produce 285 hp, which should help the not un-elegant coupé to achieve fantastic performance.
In this case, £45,000 to £55,000 seems almost cheap.
Some super classics
Of course, the super classics will not be missing at Goodwood, even if the really expensive cars are conspicuous by their absence. Nevertheless, there are several Jaguar E-Type and XK variants for sale.
A Ferrari 365 GT/4 BB from 1974 is not missing either, the early Berlinetta Boxer is said to cost USD 180,000 to 225,000, notabene with a four-digit mileage on the speedometer. However, chassis 18259 is right-hand drive and the famous six-flow exhaust system has been replaced by a four-flow system.
For Aston fans, the 1978 V8 "Oscar India" with chassis V8/SOR/12039 might be worth a second look. It is said to cost £ 120,000 to £ 160,000 and was one of only 12 cars delivered from the factory with the ZF manual gearbox.
A Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is just as much a part of Bonhams as a 280 SL and a BMW 3.0 CSi.
The exotic
Many auction participants have probably never seen some of the cars on the lot list before.
Only rarely is a Trident Clipper offered at auction. The blue coupé, which was originally developed by TVR but ultimately built and sold by another company, dates from 1971 and has been extensively restored. The history is sketchy, but the driving performance with the V8-302 Ford engine is likely to be impressive thanks to the plastic bodywork. £25,000 to £30,000 does not seem excessive for so much driving pleasure.
The Jaguar XJ-S TWR V12 HE 6.1-liter Lynx Eventer Sports Estate from 1986 can certainly be counted among the exotic cars. This Shooting Break is said to be the only car that received TWR upgrades back then and it has been professionally restored. In any case, this estate conversion is one of the most successful attempts to turn a coupé into a sports estate. £ 55,000 to £ 65,000 is expected.
