For the first time in many years, Bonhams is organizing an auction in Gstaad. This replaces the well-established Bonmont event and takes advantage of the glamor of the beautifully situated spa and vacation resort of Gstaad, which has been able to count on many British guests for decades.
On July 3, 2022, 55 classic cars, including a motorcycle, will go under the hammer, as well as two works of art, one of which is sure to delight Lotus fans, as it depicts a Lotus Esprit S2.
In total, the 55 vehicles were valued at around CHF 10.6 million or CHF 192,000 per lot. Untypically for an auction in Switzerland, almost two thirds (35 lots) of the vehicles were offered without a reserve price.
Young Ferrari and Porsche
24 brands will be represented in Gstaad, with Ferrari (7), Porsche (6) and Lamborghini (6) having the highest number of vehicles for sale, followed by Aston Martin (5), Bentley (4) and Mercedes-Benz (4).
While Aston Martin's sports cars are on average around 46 years old, the average age of Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini is closer to 36 years.
On average, the vehicles are 45 years old. Only one pre-war car can be found in the catalog, while the youngtimer and neoclassic fraction (from 1992 onwards) is represented by 14 vehicles, including the Ducati 916 motorcycle from 1998.
Twice Beutler
Alongside Herrmann Graber, the Beutler brothers are certainly among the best-known Swiss coachbuilders. In the fifties and early sixties, they repeatedly caused a stir at the Geneva Motor Show and they clad many chassis of renowned car manufacturers such as Bugatti, BMW, Jaguar, Porsche and Volkswagen. You could also order a body for your Bristol chassis in Thun near Bern, which is exactly what the buyer of 406E5002 did. Beutler then gave 5002 a coupé body.
One of these Bristol 406 Coupés was shown in London at the Motor Show, two others are said to have been built, but it is apparently still not possible to say conclusively which car the Bonhams car is. It also lost its documentation at some point and is now going under the hammer without its original registration documents and after a long period of ownership. CHF 80,000 to 140,000 was the estimate.
A Volkswagen Beutler 1.2 from 1959, which is one of only 28 of these Beutler Coupés that were also popular in Germany, is in much better condition and has more documentation. The completely restored car with chassis number 3395274 is expected to fetch CHF 80,000 to 120,000.
Twice Frua
The Monteverdi 375 S Coupé is probably one of the most elegant creations designed by Pietro Frua. He designed and built just 10 of these coupés for Peter Monteverdi before production was transferred to Carrozzeria Fissore in 1969, leading to some dissonance between Monteverdi and Frua. The coupé on offer is chassis 1003, probably the third example that was shown in yellow at both the Geneva and New York motor shows.
The car changed hands several times in the USA and was also part of Jay Leno's collection for a while. The car, which is equipped with an automatic transmission, has not been used for around 12 years and the documents from the USA have obviously been lost. Some work may therefore still need to be invested here, but at CHF 70,000 to 110,000 the estimate was set relatively low, especially as the car is being offered without a reserve price.
The same applies to the 1971 AC 428 Fastback with chassis number CFX81, another creation by Pietro Frua. Here, CHF 70,000 to 100,000 is enough and the car also needs to be revived for the first time after a long period of disuse.
The Monteverdi 375/4 from 1974 with chassis number 3116 does not come directly from Frua. This is a Fissore body with a long wheelbase and four doors. Only a few of these limousines were built, but the history of the car on offer is relatively vague, which probably explains the estimated value of CHF 80,000 to 140,000.
Many super classics
There will be no shortage of super classics in Gstaad, thanks to the five Astons, two of which are equipped with six-cylinder engines and three with V8 engines.
But the four Bentleys can also all be counted among the particularly popular classics.
There is "only" one Mexico 4200 for sale from Maserati, priced at CHF 50,000 to 80,000. There is also a modern Granturismo GT4 from 2012/2014.
The choice is greater at Ferrari, where in addition to a 250 GTE 2+2 Series 1 (CHF 200,000 to 300,000), a 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1972 (CHF 550,000 to 750,000) and two Testarossa derivatives, a 1991 F40 with Swiss first delivery is also on offer for CHF 1.6 to 1.8 million.
From Lamborghini, you can buy a 400 GT 2+2 for CHF 400,000 to 500,000, an Islero S Coupé from 1968 (CHF 160,000 to 220'000), an Espada Series II from 1970 (CHF 50,000 to 80,000) and a Jalpa P 350 from 1991 (CHF 90,000 to 110,000), as well as two newer 12-cylinder models.
For Porsche enthusiasts, there are two 356 and several 911 derivatives, including a 993 Turbo from 1996, which is listed in the catalog for CHF 70,000 to 110,000.
From Rolls-Royce, a Silver Wraith Saloon from 1951 (CHF 40,000 to 60,000) or a Camargue from 1976 (CHF 60,000 to 90,000) can be purchased at auction, while the four cars with a Mercedes star include a 220 Cabriolet A, a 220 SEb Coupé and a 280 SL Pagoda.
Specialties
Of course, there is no shortage of other specialties in addition to the cars already mentioned.
This certainly includes the Heinkel cabin from 1957, which is offered for CHF 20,000 to 30,000.
A 1975 Jensen Interceptor Cabriolet (estimated value CHF 40,000 to 70,000) is also not something you come across every day and the 1981 Renault 5 Turbo (estimated value CHF 130,000 to 150,000) is popular but still rare to buy.
The rarities also include the Alvis Speed SC 20 DHC from 1934, which Bonhams can offer for CHF 80,000 to 120,000, and the Facel Vega Facel II from 1963, which is listed in the catalog for CHF 150,000 to 200,000 (no reserve).
Although the Alfa Romeo 1900C is well known, the 1956 Super Sprint Barchetta version built by Ghia and designed by Michelotti is a one-off and is valued accordingly at CHF 300,000 to 400,000.
A Citroën DS 21 "Majesty" from 1969 manufactured by Chapron should be somewhat cheaper, CHF 50,000 to 100,000 was used as an estimate.
But you can also get a car even cheaper in Gstaad, for example if you bid on the Fiat 500 L from 1970 (CHF 10,000 to 20,000) or are interested in the BMW Z3M Coupé from 1999, which will go under the hammer for CHF 30,000 to 50,000 with no reserve price.
Read the catalog carefully
It is worth studying Bonhams' detailed descriptions carefully and asking the specialists, as some of the cars have been out of service for a long time and import taxes/VAT are still due on various vehicles.
Further information and many pictures can be found on the Bonhams website.
