Special times, special solutions! After all major Goodwood racing events had to be canceled in the Covid year 2020, the Goodwood Speedweek was scheduled for mid-October 2020 as a quasi-replacement without a large audience. Bonhams will be holding an auction at this Speedweek, which will also be subject to special rules.
The lots will be on display in the Earls Court building at Goodwood Circuit, where they can also be viewed by appointment. The auction will be held in London at 101 Bond Street and there will be a live link to the salesroom at Goodwood. A limited number of bidders will be able to follow the auction and place bids at both locations. The usual internet, telephone call and pre-bids will also be available.
Large offer
99 cars will go under the hammer on October 17, 2020 from 13:00 (on-site time). The total value is £ 19.3 million (EUR 21.2 million, CHF 22.9 million). This means that EUR 214,222 or CHF 231,749 is expected per car. Five lots will be sold without a minimum bid, including your Aston Martin DB4 (£ 250'00 to 350'000).
On average, the cars are 54 years old, with 20 vehicles dating back to the pre-war period.
Ferrari ahead of Aston Martin, Jaguar and Bentley
Half of the vehicles on offer come from five brands: Ferrari (14 cars), Aston Martin (11), Jaguar (9), Bentley (8) and Porsche (7).
But perhaps it is the individually represented brands such as Alvis, Invicta or Riley that attract the most interest.
The Swiss collection
Under the name "The Alps to Goodwood Collection", the collection of an enthusiastic car lover from Switzerland with eclectic tastes will go under the hammer. There is an Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider from 1964 (£ 80,000 to 110,000), a Jaguar Mk 2 3.8 from 1961 (£ 40,000 to 60,000), a Bentley 6 1/2 / 8 Litre Le Mans Tourer from 1926 (£ 600,000 to 800'000), a Bentley R-Type Continental from 1953 (£ 0.8 to 1 million), a Railton Eight from 1936 (£ 30'000 to 50'000), a Jaguar XK 150 Roadster from 1959 (£80,000 to £100,000) and a Cadillac Allanté from 1987 (£10,000 to £15,000).
However, the cream of the collection on offer is probably the Invicta 4 1/2 Litre S-Type Low Chassis Sports "Simpon" from 1931 with bodywork by Carbodies and chassis number S90, because not only is the history still known today, the car was also used at the Ards TT and at Brooklands at the time.
Now £1 to £1.2 million has been set for the rare racing sports car.
The collection of a gentleman racer
Hardly less varied than the Swiss collection is the assortment of cars offered by a gentleman racer.
Among them, for example, is an Emeryson Formula 1 car from 1961 with a 1.5-liter engine, which took part in the Formula 1 World Championship at the time with chassis number 1004.
A Ford Zephyr Mk II 2.4 liter Competition Saloon from 1959, which was rebuilt as a racing car a few years ago, provides the counterpoint.
It is joined by several sports cars from Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz.
Another collection called the "Chester Collection" includes only black and silver sports cars, which are definitely worth seeing. These cars go under the hammer at the very end of the auction.
The Richard Bolster Special
If that isn't an interesting mix! Chassis from Frazer Nash, engine from MG, steering from Lea Francis and the seat from a DC3 Dakota. Richard Bolster raced this car in hill climb and circuit races in Great Britain in the 1930s.
The Special has survived and is now expected to fetch £140,000 to £170,000.
Wide Aston range
Over 60 years of Aston history cover 11 sports cars from the famous British sports car manufacturer, which will go under the hammer on October 17, 2020. From the Aston Martin DB2/4 from 1953 (£180,000 to £220,000) to the AM Works 60th anniversary LE Vanquish Volante from 2015, there is a nice range of sports cars on offer, including the DB5, the V8, the Virage and the DB9.
The most expensive Aston is a purple-colored DB6 Volante from 1969, which is offered for £ 550,000 to £ 650,000.
Most expensive Ferrari
The highest valued car, however, is a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, valued at £1.2 million to £1.5 million.
Just a little below that is a 1991 F40, which is said to cost £900,000 to £1.3 million.
For lots of fun
Many of the cars on offer should provide a lot of driving pleasure.
However, the 1983 Ford Fiesta 1300 Group 1 converted into a racing car, which Bonhams plans to sell for £ 35,000 to £ 45,000, is likely to occupy a top spot here.
The 1960 MGA as an FIA Competition Roadster, which would like to find a new owner for £ 14,000 to £ 20,000, is likely to go in a similar direction.
If you want something a little faster, you could also go for the Lotus Elan 26R Coupé from 1964 for £ 40,000 to £ 60,000.
It is worth taking a closer look at the extensive range on offer. More information and pictures can of course be found on the Bonhams website.
