Bonhams will auction 63 vehicles, including four motorcycles, on June 5, 2022 at the Greenwich Concours around 50 km north-east of New York. Together, the vehicles are worth around USD 6.6 million and are on average almost 55 years old. At 83 percent, the proportion of lots auctioned without a reserve price is very high.
British first
33 cars come from British brands, Aston Martin alone is represented with 13 sports cars, followed by Rolls-Royce with seven, Jaguar with five and Bentley with four cars.
But European brands also dominate elsewhere, as five Porsches (including a 356 A Speedster with an interesting history), four Mercedes-Benzes, four Facel-Vega complete the European delegation together with an Alfa, two Ferraris, a Fiat and a Jensen and a few more Brits.
Wide range of conditions
The broad spectrum of vehicle conditions on offer at Greenwich is unusual.
From elaborately restored cars, such as the Jaguar XK 120 FHC from 1953, to restoration objects that have even been on a demolition site for a long time, such as the Aston Martin DB Mk III Notchback Tickford Coupé from 1959, everything is there.
Some of the vehicles also indicate that they have been standing for a long time and need some mechanical work.
Noble four-door cars
Two rare four-door cars stand out in the catalog. One is a late Aston Martin Lagonda Series IV from 1989. Equipped with fuel injection and one of only 72 left-hand drive Series IV examples, this saloon has covered just 12,325 miles.
Now USD 70,000 to 90,000 is to be spent on it.
The Facel Vega Excellence from 1961 is a little more expensive, but also considerably rarer. It is one of only eight EX2 versions built and was also exhibited at the 1961 Paris Motor Show.
However, the car has not been driven for the last twelve years, so a few mechanic's hours should be factored in in addition to the USD 80,000 to 120,000.
Speaking of Facel: in addition to the Excellence, three Coupés, two Facel IIs and an FV4 will also go under the hammer. Estimates vary between USD 160,000 and 240,000.
More than a dozen Aston Martin
With 13 cars, the Aston Martin brand has the largest share of the 59 cars in Greenwich. While DB4 and DB5 are missing, there is at least one DB6 from 1966 in Vantage specification for USD 300,000 to 400,000.
DBS and DBS V8 up to the following V8 models are well represented, but early DB variants such as DB 2/4 or DB Mk III are also represented with five vehicles. The prices are mainly based on the condition, which is rather modest for some of the cars.
One of the rare Isleros
Only 125 Lamborghini Islero were built, making this coupé one of the rarest Lambos ever.
At USD 150,000 to 200,000, the Islero appears to be reasonably priced, but it has already changed color several times and has not been moved in the last 14 years.
Some good opportunities
At Bonhams in Greenwich, you can get a classic car for very little money in addition to luxury and super classics.
You can buy a 1959 Fiat 600 at auction for as little as USD 15,000 to 20,000.
An MG TD from 1953 can also be had for the same price and a Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 Coupé from 1971 is already in the catalog for USD 30,000 to 50,000. Of course, you should check the condition before buying.
As more than three quarters of the vehicles are being offered without a minimum price, there could be many more bargains to be had and perhaps the 1995 Acura NSX-T, for example, will be available for significantly less than the estimated USD 50,000 to 70,000.
