If the offerings from RM/Sotheby's or Gooding & Co around the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance don't offer enough variety and color, you should work your way through the list of cars that Bonhams will be auctioning at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club in Carmel on August 13, 2021.
139 vehicles (including a caravan) will go under the hammer in one afternoon, the total value is estimated at around USD 44 million, which is not quite USD 320,000 per car.
Great variety
Racing cars, luxury limousines, hot rods, everyday classics, convertibles, special bodies, sports cars, neo-classics and much more are all looking for new owners in one day - there is certainly no shortage of variety at Bonhams.
The prices also vary widely. It starts at USD 5000 if you like to buy a Fiat 124 Spider and ends at several million if you are more into Cobras, Ford GT40s or a Bucciali.
49 brands are listed in the catalog, the largest contingents are from Ferrari (15 cars including a Dino), Ford (13), Aston Martin (12), Jaguar 9) and Porsche (8). However, many manufacturers are only represented with one car, such as Alfa Romeo, American LaFrance, DeLorean and Nash-Healey.
57 percent of the cars are offered without a reserve price, so the chance of finding a bargain has rarely been greater.
A Bucciali!
There are few car brands that are more mysterious and exotic than Bucciali. The brothers Angelo and Paul-Albert Bucciali built around 26 cars between 1912 and 1932, the first under the name BUC, the last eight under the Bucciali brand. They were technical masterpieces designed to demonstrate the possibilities of front-wheel drive, which the two brothers had developed to production maturity and protected with several patents.
One of the chassis, which was already being further developed and perfected at that time, was initially given the chassis number TAV 3, later TAV 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 and finally TAV 30. The chassis alone had six bodies in those days. Not all of them were convincing and the chassis was finally sold by Paul-Albert Bucciali for one franc together with all the other Bucciali remnants. The chassis was reconsidered and in the seventies was combined with a Saoutchik body, which came from a Mercedes-Benz 680S.
The car has survived to this day and is now on the market for an undisclosed sum.
One of ten Ford GT40 Mk IVs
The Ford GT40 Mk IV with a seven-litre V8 engine won Le Mans in 1967, with Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt at the wheel, maximizing the American triumph. Only ten of these cars were built in total, and the J-9 on offer is one of the last.
It served as a test car and was used in the CanAm G7A class, notabene with an open racing car body.
After restoration, it looks like a GT40 again and is said to cost USD 3 to 3.5 million.
Rare Riley MPH
Only 16 Riley MPHs were built in the 1930s. The car on offer with chassis number 44T 2246 is said to have appeared at the London Show in 1934 and was the first two-seater to be built. The six-cylinder engine had a displacement of 1633 cm3 and produced an impressive 80 hp at 5000 rpm for the time.
The fully restored car won its class in Amelia Island in 2021 and is now set to find a new owner for USD 800,000 to 1.2 million.
The twelfth Facel Vega Excellence built
154 four-door Facel Vega Excellence were built. Powered by a Chrysler V8, they were among the most luxurious and elegant limousines of the late 1950s.
Chassis EX1 A2 originally went to New Jersey and is now in restored condition for USD 80'000 to 100'000 to find a new enthusiast who appreciates this car without B-pillar.
The special Ferrari 212 Europa
In the 1950s, Enzo Ferrari still had his cars fitted by various external coachbuilders. For the 110 Ferrari 212s built, for example, the artists at Vignale, Pinin Farina, Touring and Ghia worked to the customer's taste.
Chassis 0233 EU is one of the twelve-cylinder sports cars that Ghia has fitted with an elegant body. Born as 0191 EL in December 1951, the finished car was shown in Geneva and later in Turin, later renumbered 0233 EU by Ferrari.
Now the fully restored and naturally Ferrari-certified convertible is set to find a new Ferrari enthusiast for USD 1.7 to 2.1 million.
Some exotic cars
There is no shortage of unusual vehicles at the Bonhams Quail Lodge auction. One of the 59 TVR Griffith 400s built by Jack Griffith, which was once a combination of a Grantura chassis and a Ford V8 engine, came under the hammer.
At that time, however, four gears still had to suffice and the plastic bodywork also looked somewhat different. Now the coupé is set to change hands for USD 100,000 to 140,000.
Even rarer are the two Dolphin racing cars. Budd Hull built around 50 cars with his company Dolphin Engineering, two of which can be bought at Bonhams.
Chassis 004 with a Chevrolet V8 engine from 1961 is said to cost USD 60,000 to 90,000.
The Dolphin America with Abarth four-cylinder engine from 1964 is to find a new box for USD 70,000 to 100,000.
Sydney Allard built his racing sports cars a little earlier, including the particularly attractive J2 models. Chassis 99J2123 from 1951 is equipped with a large Cadillac V8 engine with an output of around 280 hp and should be quite nippy to drive. With an interesting racing history and extensive documentation, the Allard is said to be worth USD 225,000 to 275,000.
The Pedroso Roadster, one of two prototypes built in France at the end of the 1920s, is cheaper but even rarer than the Allard. The engine was a self-developed in-line eight-cylinder with two overhead camshafts and a valve train that could be adjusted from the cockpit. This technological marvel is now expected to cost USD 100,000 to 150,000. However, some work will probably be necessary before the car can be brought back to life after a long period of disuse.
The Talbot-Lago G26 Record Sport Cabriolet with bodywork by Figoni et Falaschi from 1948 should not need any work, as the car has just come out of a decades-long restoration and is still awaiting its awards at the major concours. However, at USD 1.8 to 2.3 million, this entry ticket must cost something.
For a fraction of that price, you can buy a vehicle that can get around on the road as well as on the sea - an Amphicar Model 770, of course. The ship's car from 1965 is set to pass into the hands of a new captain for USD 40,000 to 50,000.
The first car to go under the hammer is a late Subaru 360 from 1970, which has only covered 15,000 miles and has never been restored. It has now been estimated at USD 30,000 to 50,000.
Tom Hanks sells his fleet of cars
If you're more into celebrity cars, you might want to take a look at the three cars and the caravan that are being auctioned off from Tom Hanks' estate.
Whether the star bonus is enough to achieve record prices for the Tesla, the Toyota FJ40, the Ford F450 pickup or the Airstream trailer remains to be seen.
Lots of super classics, of course
Of course, there will be no shortage of opportunities to buy a super classic in Carmel.
Among the 12 Aston Martins, for example, there are several DB4s, DB5s and DB6s.
Various Bentleys and Rolls-Royces are looking for new buyers, as are popular Ferrari classics.
The Jaguar range covers the popular XK and E-Type models and almost the entire Maserati range from the 1970s is available to buy.
A Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is just as much a part of the collection as a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 (USD 700,000 to 900,00).
And for the American sports car nationalists, there are several Cobras.
More information and pictures of all the cars can be found on the Bonhams website.
