Preview (beginning of the article)
It was almost expected. The auctions surrounding the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance are good for new price highs every year. Bonhams led the way and immediately set a new absolute record. The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO from the Maranello Rosso collection, which was once driven by Jo Schlesser and Henri Oreiller and won second place in the 1962 Tour de France, sold for USD 38 million (CHF 34,487,982 or € 28,469,524), setting a new world auction record. Bonhams had also set the previous record with a Mercedes Benz W198 R Monoposto. Buyers around the world bid for the Ferrari 250 GTO, the auction pavilion was filled to bursting point, with lots of energy and enthusiasm the bids rose quickly at the beginning, in between there was silence and applause every time a next level was passed.
