On August 16, 2024, Bonhams will auction 106 automobiles and a Vespa in addition to several Automobila during the Pebble Beach week in Carmel. The total value of the vehicles has been estimated at USD 28.64 million, which equates to almost USD 268,000 per lot. So you don't necessarily have to be a millionaire to bid at Bonhams, especially as 71 vehicles (66%) will go under the hammer with no minimum bid.
Few pre-war cars and young classics
Despite the comparatively high average age of 57 years, only nine cars date from before 1945.
At the same time, only a few cars have a year of construction that does not yet make them youngtimers; eight cars were built after 1994.
Porsche and the rest
16 cars bear a Porsche badge, nine a Dodge Badge. Aston Martin and Chevrolet follow with eight cars, Ford and Plymouth with six. Five Maserati complete the group of brands that have at least a handful of vehicles on the grid.
The strong presence of American brands is already evident here; in fact, they make up more than two-fifths of the range.
At the other end of the brand spectrum are exotics such as Delage, Detroit Electric, Star and Talbot-Lago.
Divided into two
Two groups of cars actually go under the hammer at the Quail Lodge auction.
On the one hand, super classics of all ages are offered, on the other hand American "muscle cars", the latter especially in the second half of the auction.
Eight cars for seven figures
A total of eight cars are expected to come into new hands at prices starting at one million. There is the certainly very special Fiat-Isotta-Fraschini Volo-6 Competiton Two-Seater from 1905, one of the two oldest vehicles in the auction.
This road-legal racing car has a 16.6-liter aircraft engine that delivers around 250 hp to the rear axle via two chains. With a long history and certainly an interesting sound backdrop, this early automobile is now set to find a new owner for USD 1.5 to 2.5 million.
At best, a little more is expected for a BMW 507 of the 2nd series including hardtop, USD 1.8 to 2.5 million are estimated here.
Two Porsches are also aiming for two million: a 959 from 1993, the super sports car from Zuffenhausen in the 1990s. And then a gold-colored Porsche 928 from 1979, which wants to justify its million-dollar value by the fact that it was driven by Tom Cruise in the film "Risky Business".
Some time ago, this exact car was sold at auction for even more than the USD 1.4 to 1.8 million now expected. I wonder why?
For a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso from 1964, USD 1.45 to 1.75 million should change hands.
And a modern Ford GT Mk II from 2021 is expected to cost USD 1 to 1.5 million.
Also worth mentioning is the Prsche 914/6 GT from 1970, which won its class at the Monza 1000 km in 1971. This is now to be valued at USD 0.9 to 1.2 million.
And then there is a Talbot-Lago T150C "Lago Spéciale" convertible from Figoni, a very elegant tourer with an inline six-cylinder engine and pre-selector gearbox. The asking price here is USD 680,000 to 750,000.
Maserati selection
With five attractive cars, the Maserati selection is particularly interesting.
In addition to an almost normal 3500 GT Coupé from 1961, you can also buy the Vignale Cabriolet version from 1960.
With the 5000 GT Allemano from 1962, one of the manufacturer's 34 super sports cars goes under the hammer for EUR 600,000 to 700,000.
The Mistral 3.7 Spyder is one of Pietro Frua's most beautiful designs, the convertible built in 1968 is expected to cost USD 350,000 to 400,000.
And the Ghibli 4.9 SS from 1972 completes the quintet with an estimated value of USD 140,000 to 180,000.
Incidentally, Lamborghini can also offer something exotic, namely a very reasonably priced Jarama 400 GTS from 1976. The USD 40,000 to 60,000 can probably be explained by the fact that some "reconditioning" is still required, but also by the fact that this GTS is probably one of the few with a three-speed automatic transmission.
The Islero 400 GT from 1968 is expected to be somewhat more expensive, with a price tag of USD 190,000 to 250,000.
Lots of muscle
For fans of powerful US cars, the lots from 169 upwards should be of particular interest. The "Golden State Muscle Car Collection" has almost everything you could wish for. Powerful Hemi engines, brute-looking coupés, sleek, horsepower-packed saloons, convertibles and much more with trademarks from Chevrolet, Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Shelby and others.
When can you bid on a Plymouth Savoy "Lightweight Hemi" or a Dodge Coronet 424 'Hemi' hardtop coupe?
Of course, Camaro, Corvette or 'Cuda are not missing, a closer look is worthwhile. And another tip: the dollar is cheap for Europeans at the moment.
