Before the final F1 race of the season, Bonhams, in collaboration with the Formula 1 Paddock Club in Abu Dhabi, will auction 33 cars worth USD 30.1 million. On average, USD 912,500 is expected for each 1:1 scale car (there are also three children's cars for sale).
The average age is not quite 17 years, which is well below what we are used to from other Bonhams auctions.
17 manufacturers
The 33 cars are spread across 17 brands. Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche are represented with four vehicles, Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz with three each.
The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am looks almost exotic in this lineup. At 50 years old, it is the oldest car in the auction and is expected to fetch between USD 50,000 and 70,000. Like 11 other cars (a good third in total), it is being offered without a reserve price.
3 Formula 1 cars
The highlight of the auction is sure to be the Lotus Type 79 Monoposto in which Mario Andretti won the 1978 Zandvoort Grand Prix. With this revolutionary F1 car in the attractive JPS livery, Lotus and Colin Chapman won the F1 championship. In principle, the Type 79 was an improved Lotus 78, which went down in history as the first wing car.
However, at USD 6.5 to 9.5 million, the Lotus 79 will not come cheap. In any case, it is considerably more expensive than a Ferrari F2001 from 2001, which is not intended for driving but for presentation ("show car"), but has probably hardly done many fewer kilometers than other F1 cars in private hands.
USD 450,000 to 650,000 is enough to buy the immobile F1 car from Maranello.
In comparison, the 2006 McLaren-Mercedes-Benz MP4/21 driven by Kimi Raikkonen in eight Grand Prix races in the "Emirates" livery will be considerably more expensive. The estimate here is USD 2.5 to 3.5 million.
2 super rarities
For those who prefer to cause a stir on the road in a show car rather than a Formula 1 car, there are two rarities that may go under the hammer in Abu Dhabi.
There is the De Tomaso Guarà Barchetta from (approx.) 1995, of which only ten were built. This car is for purists, as it lacks a windscreen, power steering, power brakes or ABS. A helmet is recommended. The car will change hands for USD 180,000 to 220,000, no minimum price is required.
The Italdesign Aztec from 1988 is expected to be just as expensive as the Barchetta. Only just under 20 examples were built on the basis of Giugiaro's show car and, unlike the De Tomaso, it can also be driven without a helmet.
1 noble movie crash car
You can no longer drive the Lamborghini Countach from the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street". This is a model from 1989, a 25th anniversary edition. Anyone who has seen the movie will remember it. In current condition.
Apparently, in addition to the stunt scenes, a lot of post-processing with heavy equipment was necessary to make the Lambo look as destroyed as it is now being sold.
Whether you want to pay USD 1.5 to 2 million for this exhibit or would rather look for a drivable example for a third of the price is up to you.
1 Barn find
Well, the 1993 Porsche 964 Carrera RSR 3.8 liter did not come from a barn as a road version. But it still has the protective coating and some dirt on the surface and really looks like it was pulled out of a barn. It is said to be the RSR with the lowest mileage ever (10 km).
USD 2 to 2.5 million is asked for the virgin Porsche.
Many young supercars and hypercars
The rest of the offer is made up of fairly young cars, which in many cases deserve the attribute "hypercar", but otherwise certainly "supercar", as well as some rare luxury sedans such as a Lagonda Taraf from 2015 or a Maybach 62 S from 2012.
Several super-fast Ferraris, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz are coming under the hammer with fairly low mileages, but the two Alfa Romeo 8C Coupé from 2008 and Spider from 2010 are certainly also of interest.
A Ferrari 512M from 1996 and a BMW Z8 from 2000 still just fit into the youngtimer window.
Further information and many pictures of the cars can be found on the Bonhams website.
