If the value per vehicle at an auction is USD 1.15 million, but the lots also include a motorcycle with an estimate of USD 40,000 to 60,000, then you can assume that the goods must otherwise be of a very high caliber. This was certainly the case on December 8, 2023 in New York, when RM/Sotheby's swung the hammer over 16 cars and the two-wheeler in question, a Ducati Desmosedici D16RR from 2018.
A turnover of USD 13.56 million was achieved, 13 of the 17 vehicles, i.e. 76%, were sold for an average of USD 1,043,246.
The "other" Lambo from the movie "Wolf of Wall Street" found a new owner
Two white Lamborghini Countach "Anniversary Edition" cars were used in the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street". One was famously severely deformed, while the other served as an undamaged specimen. While the "accident car" was offered by Bonhams in Abu Dhabi, RM/Sotheby's in New York auctioned off the other movie car, which had survived the filming unscathed.
The specialists at RM/Sotheby's had expected a bid of between USD 1.5 and 2 million, but the highest bid was right at the lower end of the estimate. In the end, the film countach fetched USD 1.655 million (EUR 1.539 million, CHF 1.456 million), around 2 to 2.5 times what a less famous example might have fetched.
Two special special bodies sold
The two oldest vehicles in the auction, with an average age of 31 years, were two special-bodied cars from the 1950s.
Only 14 examples of the Fiat 8V Supersonic were built to a design by Savonuzzi, one of which, built in 1953, was sold by RM/Sotheby's for USD 2.425 million (EUR 2.255 million, CHF 2.134 million); the estimate was USD 2.1 to 2.6 million.
The Aston Martin DB 2/4 Bertone from 1954 is even a one-off, as Bertone only produced one coupé based on the Aston DB2. However, the expectations (USD 1.2 to 1.6 million) were not quite fulfilled here, as USD 1.105 million (EUR 1.028 million, CHF 972,400) was enough to purchase the Concours rarity.
A Shelby Cobra 289 from 1963 was withdrawn before the auction.
Younger super and hyper sports cars with mixed results
Younger super and hyper sports cars made up the largest share of the New York offer.
While the 1994 Jaguar XJ220 failed at USD 500,000, the consignor of the 1994 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport prototype did not agree to sell the car despite bidding USD 2.9 million.
The Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 from 1994 was also left standing, with a bid of USD 480,000.
Two hand-shifted Ferrari 575s were sold as a coupé for USD 335,000 and as an open "Superamerica" for USD 650,000, which did not quite meet expectations.
A McLaren P1, Bugatti Veyron, Porsche 918 Spyder and Ford GT were all sold, but the estimates were only just achieved in each case.
No award for the SEC AMG Wide Body?
The AMG 6.0 Wide Body with the lowest mileage. (4898) was the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC from 1986 with AMG finish (fender extensions, spoilers and six-liter V8). Nevertheless, the bidders did not quite want to go along with the target of USD 600,000 to 750,000.
However, the USD 520,000 offered was not enough to sell the car.
A 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Roadster was sold for considerably less than the estimate, USD 122,500 (EUR 127,596, CHF 120,736) was enough to buy it.

The Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI from 1974 went into a new garage for USD 357,000 (EUR 332,010, CHF 314,160), just short of expectations but for a good price overall.
And yes, it was also cheaper in New York, at least if you were happy with two wheels. The aforementioned 2008 Ducati D16RR was knocked down for USD 50,000. It was the only vehicle for which the highest bid met the middle of expectations, while all others were knocked down for less.
The average bid was 84% of the average estimate. But with more than one million per car sold, RM/Sotheby's could not complain.
