It is a varied offer that Bonhams is putting up at its first auction on the occasion of the Grand Prix Historique in Monaco, thus competing directly with RM/Sotheby's. 40 vehicles worth EUR 22.5 million (CHF 24.6 million) will go under the hammer, so each car (including a kart) is expected to fetch around EUR 562,000 or CHF 615,000. Four lots will be sold without a reserve price.
Two particularly attractive pre-war rarities
There is hardly another Bugatti 35 with such a long and colorful racing history as chassis 4450, which Bonhams plans to sell for EUR 1 to 1.5 million (CHF 1.1 to 1.6 million) in Monaco.
From the very beginning, the 35 C, built in 1925, was mainly used in competitions in France and Great Britain. Later, the car came to Australia, received new technology and continued to be driven on race tracks. Today it is back as it was in the 1920s and actually looks surprisingly cheap when you compare the estimated value with what you pay today for super sports cars produced in large series in the 1980s.
The Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport Zagato Spider from 1929 (chassis 0312861), which was once owned by Achille Varzi, the famous racing driver, is of similar vintage. The supercharged car is now set to find a new owner for EUR 1.8 to 2.4 million (CHF 2 to 2.6 million).
The special C-Type
Not many C-Types were built, but chassis XKC 011 (originally XKC 047) is certainly one of the most famous. The car took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1953 and also competed in the 24 Hours of Spa and the ADAC 1000 Kilometer at the Nürburgring.
This is the first time in 61 years that the car has been put back on sale, after Jaguar had removed it from factory service. Now EUR 4 to 5 million (CHF 4.4 to 5.5 million) is expected for the racing car.
From the sedan to the noble off-road vehicle
However, there are not only racing cars for sale in Monaco, but practically all vehicle categories from beach cars (e.g. Fiat 500L Jolly Beach Car from 1971) to limousines (e.g. Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur Sports Saloon from 1959) to luxury off-road vehicles (Range Rover from 1971). Eight Ferraris and six Porsches are the most prominent brand presences, while the other brands are represented by two or three vehicles at most.
Away from the usual auction cars
Of course, Bonhams in Monaco is not missing the currently highly sought-after classics such as the Porsche 959, Dino 246 GT, Porsche 911 Carrera RS, Ferrari 288 GTO, Maserati Ghibli or Jaguar E-Types. They also figure in the catalog with confident estimates.
However, it is the less frequently traded rarities that might make a trip to Bonhams in Monaco worthwhile.
For example, there is a De Tomaso Vallelunga from 1968, one of probably 53 mid-engined coupés produced with a Ford Kent engine and Formula 2 suspension technology. The yellow Vallelunga with chassis 807DTO126 is particularly well known, as it was featured in various magazines and won second place in its class at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2004. The high estimated price of EUR 320,000 to 360,000 (CHF 350,000 to 390,000) is certainly due not only to its rarity but also to the elaborate restoration, which required over 2000 hours of work.
The Talbot Lago T14 LS Spécial Coupé from 1956 (chassis 140031) had a famous previous owner. The elegant coupé with the somewhat protruding rear end was once driven by the famous racing driver Louis Rosier and is one of the 54 T14 LS models. At EUR 200,000 to 260,000 (CHF 240,000 to 280,000), the car, which was restored in 1994, does not appear to be overpriced.
One of the most appealing fifties cars to drive is known to be the AC Ace with Bristol engine. Bonhams can offer one of these pretty 1957 roadsters (chassis BEX 281) for EUR 250,000 to 300,000 (CHF 270,000 to 330,000). The car was restored in 2007/2008 and took part in the Mille Miglia in 2014, among other events.
The Berlinettes from French sports car manufacturer Alpine are also attractive and valuable. The A110 1600 S from 1971 (chassis 17379), which came under the hammer in Monaco and was delivered new in Italy, appears to be largely original and is described as being "in generally very good original condition", which probably justifies the relatively wide estimate range of EUR 80,000 to 120,000 (CHF 87,000 to 130,000).
The Lancia 037 has long since made the transition to a sought-after classic, and this also applies to the Stradale versions. However, the 1980 Lancia Rally SE 037 on offer is the Group B prototype with chassis number SE037-001, which originally belonged to the Abarth company and later to engineer Sergio Limone. Accordingly, the EUR 320,000 to 400,000 (CHF 350,000 to 440,000) should not be too high.
If you prefer to drive comfortably on the road but still have a heart for rarities, you might be interested in the Ferrari 330 America from 1963 with chassis 5069. Visually, it looks like a 250 GTE, but under the hood is the larger 4.0-liter V12 engine with 300 hp. Only 50 of these fast 250 GTE variants were built and the car on offer does not appear to be overpriced at EUR 290,000 to 350,000 (CHF 320,000 to 380,000).
Of course, the list of 40 lots also has a few other rarities "in stock", but also more "popular" cars such as a BMW Z1, two Ferrari Testarossa or an Alfa Romeo Giulia SS from 1962.
Further information and many pictures of the individual cars can be found on the Bonhams website.
