On Friday, August 24, 2018, Bonhams is taking advantage of the hopefully enthusiastic buying mood surrounding Pebble Beach / Monterey Week in California (USA) to sell 135 cars in one day.
Half a million on average
On average, a lot is said to be worth around USD 505,000, with estimates starting at USD 20,000 for a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible. However, in addition to just under a third of the cars that are likely to fetch five-figure sums, there are also a dozen and a half cars at the Quail Lodge auction that are expected to fetch seven-figure sums.
Porsche, Ferrari and Jaguar
With 25 cars, Porsche is by far the best-represented brand. It is followed by Ferrari (15, including 1 Dino) and Jaguar. With 8 MG, 3 Rolls-Royce, 3 Aston Martin and 2 Lagonda vehicles, Bonhams shows the auction house's British roots.
However, there is no shortage of exotic brands, such as Arnolt-Bristol, Horch, Minerva, Pierce-Arrow, Ruf, Siata, Stutz and Veritas.
The SWB
The most valuable car in the auction is certainly the Ferrari 250 GT SWB from 1962 with chassis number 3337GT. It comes with all the necessary awards and documents and once even belonged to David Cronenberg, the filmmaker behind "The Fly" and other Hollywood films.
Bonhams does not give an estimated value, but anyone expecting a figure in the high seven-figure range is probably not entirely wrong, unless eight figures are required.
Two Ferrari F355 Spiders
Bonhams can offer two special Ferrari F355 Spiders, interesting colors and low mileages, which have only just been run in.
One of them once belonged to the actor Martin Lawrence and looks particularly smart in its "Rosso Monza" paintwork in combination with the black interior. It also has a manual gearbox. USD 100,000 to 125,000 has been estimated for this Spider.
The second F355 is one of the 100 cars that together made up the "Fiorano" series. The car with "Nero Daytona" paintwork is estimated at USD 150,000 to 175,000.
The Talbot Lago T26 Record with Saoutchik bodywork
In 1950, the Saoutchik stand at the Paris Motor Show featured a Talbot Lago R26 Coupé with elegant white and blue bodywork. This car with chassis number 100238 has survived and may still have a great concours career ahead of it, as it has not been seen very often to date. The first owner was Yvonne Bozdogan-Brawand from Switzerland.
Now the fully restored USD 1.2 to 1.6 million.
E-Type Festival
With six Jaguar E-Types, including two coupés, the selection of what Enzo Ferrari considers to be the most beautiful cars in the world is extensive. The unrestored E-Type coupé from 1962 is certainly of interest, as are the two Series 1 roadsters.
The six six-cylinder E-Types are joined by three XK 120/140s and a Mark V Drophead Coupé from 1948.
Lotus as a bargain?
A Lotus Formula Junior rarely appears at auction. All the more interesting is the Lotus 20/22 from 1961, which is being offered for just USD 50,000 to 80,000.
Although it lacks a perfectly traceable racing history from its early years, it is said to be in race-ready condition and certainly looks highly interesting.
MG selection
Eight post-war MG sports cars will go under the hammer in Carmel, all of them in the low/mid five-digit dollar range and actually covering almost the entire spectrum of the post-war years from TC to A and B. Four TCs alone in a wide variety of configurations are vying for buyers.
Special Porsche collection
The 1980s and 1990s appealed to an American collector and the nine Porsche-related cars that Bonhams is offering on August 24, 2018 also come from this period.
There is both a flat-snout turbo as a convertible from 1989 and a 993 Turbo S from 1997.
And in between a Mercedes-Benz 500E, which was also built by Porsche and was fairly valued at USD 40,000 to 50,000.
Many super classics
Of course, the super classics are not missing at Bonhams. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing from 1955 (USD 1.25 to 1.5 million) is just as much looking for a buyer as the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1973 or the Porsche 356B as a Carrera 2 Coupé from 1963.
A BMW 328 from 1939 and a Shelby Cobra 289 from 1964 are also on offer, as is the Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider America from 1955 (USD 1 to 1.3 million).
Bonhams' cars are 45 years old on average and cover a considerable spectrum of designs and characteristics, so the auction will certainly be interesting. But because all three major auction houses have decided to auction on the same day (August 24) in 2018, there will probably not only be a battle of the cars, but also a battle for the bidders. Bonhams is already making a strong start with over 53 percent no-reserve bids.
