On one day only, August 19, 2016, Bonhams will take advantage of the clientele present around Pebble Beach to auction 115 cars. The total value of the vehicles is approximately USD 51 million (EUR 48 million, CHF 50 million), with each vehicle expected to fetch around USD 445,000 (EUR 415,000, CHF 435,000), making Bonhams a little more popular than the very expensive auctions of Gooding & Co and RM/Sotheby's. However, the Bonhams auction is not for the faint-hearted, even though the cheapest lot is priced from USD 25,000.
Variety is the order of the day
Once again, Bonhams has put together a particularly broad offering.
25 of the cars are from the pre-war period, 23 from the years 1945 to 1959. The largest proportion are cars from the 1960s, with 30 of them at the start, while 14 vehicles are less than 30 years old, five of which are from the current century, including the two super sports cars McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari from 2014, both of which are naturally hoping to be traded in the millions.
Porsche, Jaguar and Ferrari
52 brands are spread across the 115 lots, the most numerous being Porsche (15 cars), followed by Jaguar (10), Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz (9).
Many brand names that have long since disappeared appear in the lot list, including Allard, Alvis, Auburn, Bandini, Cheetah, Delauney-Belleville, Fuller, Hudson, Muntz and Riley, to name just a few examples.
High risk
Where Bonhams clearly differentiates itself from the competition is in the high proportion of lots that are offered without a reserve price.
After all, there are 68 (or 59%) of them where buyers can hope for a bargain.
The ultimate Cheetah
One of the most exciting vehicles at Quail Lodge is certainly the 1964 Cheetah GT, one of 11 built by Bill Thomas.
With over 400 hp and a lightweight plastic body, this icon of the Californian sports car scene is sure to be a tough nut to crack for many a vintage racing opponent. However, USD 300,000 to 500,000 is certainly a confident estimate, especially as its racing history is not all that long.
The slim Bandini
The Bandini 750 Sport Siluro from 1953, an extremely lightweight and slim sports car that is more reminiscent of a formula car than a two-seater, was created a decade earlier with a similar objective to the Cheetah.
At USD 100,000 to 150,000, this car should certainly be worth a second look.
Young BMW
For once, it is not the 328 or M1 models that are appearing at auction under the BMW flag, but an M5 (US version), a Z1 and a Z8.
The Z1 in particular has only rarely been offered at American auctions in the past, but as a classic that is now over 25 years old, it can now be officially introduced and redeemed. It will be interesting to see whether the USD 50,000 to 100,000 can also serve as a reasonable benchmark for bidders.
Super classics
Of course, Bonhams is not missing the super classics either, whether they are called Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (as Roadser), Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona (as Cabriolet), Aston Martin DB4, Jaguar E-Type (six versions, Series 1 to 3), XK (three versions), Ferrari F40 and 288 GTO or Porsche 911 S and 930 Turbo.
There are also some Pagodas up for auction, one of which once belonged to Hollywood great Jane Russel.
