Towards the end of each year, the French auction house Artcurial organizes an auction at its Paris headquarters, and on 22 October 2023 it will happen again.
72 vehicles, including a tractor, will go under the hammer. On average, the vehicles were estimated at EUR 90,375, more than half (38) will be sold without a reserve price.
45 years old on average
While the oldest car dates back to 1939, a 1939 Cadillac Series 60 being the only pre-war car, the youngest car was only built in 2018.
The average age of the vehicles is just under 45 years, with the 1960s and 1980s particularly well represented.
Some super classics
Artcurial is bringing 11 Ferrari, eight Mercedes-Benz, seven Porsche, six Citroën and five Jaguar under the hammer in Paris, as well as a potpourri of 24 other brands, including Aston Martin, Lotus, BMW and Maserati.
At least a third of the vehicles could be described as super classics. For example, there are two Citroën DS 19s up for auction, a DS 21 Cabriolet from 1968 (EUR 230,000 to 300,000) and a Citroën SM from 1973 (EUR 40,000 to 50,000).
From Ferrari, a 365 GT 2+2 from 1969 (EUR 170,000 to 210,000), a 512 BB from 1981 (EUR 180,000 to 220,000), several 308/328 variants as well as newer 12- and 8-cylinder models will come under the hammer.
A Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Litre Coupé with the flat floor from 1961 is on the lot for just EUR 80,000 to 120,000. It comes from many years of ownership, but has been converted from RHD to LHD and has a later four-speed gearbox fitted.
The Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 from 1968, which is the only Lamborghini on offer for EUR 270,000 to 310,000, is certainly also of interest.
Also worth mentioning is an early Maserati 3500 GT built in 1960, which was once bought by a Swiss racing driver in the USA. The car was completely restored around 10 years ago and the original engine was preserved. The estimate is now EUR 140,000 to 180,000, which would certainly be at the lower end of the market.
The 3500 GT is joined by a 1973 Indy 4.9 Litre, which is estimated at EUR 45,000 to 65,000 and is being offered without a reserve price.
Also worth mentioning is a Lotus Elite from 1960, which is looking for a new buyer for EUR 50,000 to 70,000. It is a rare left-hand drive example that was once exported to the USA and whose plastic body was restored and painted in its original color a few years ago.
Naturally, some super classics with a star are also on offer, including two Pagodas, two SE Coupés and an SE Cabriolet. And Stuttgart's neighbor Porsche is also worthily represented.
The modern RSR as the most valuable car
With the Porsche 964 3.8 Litre Carrera RSR from 1993, Artcurial is able to sell a race-proven and very rare (51 built) sports car with an impressive racing history, which also appears to be road-legal. The car finished sixth in the 24 Hours of Daytona and has since been extensively restored.
Participants in the auction on October 22, 2023 will be able to see whether all this will be enough for the EUR 900,000 to 1.2 million that is now being asked for.
Fast touring sedans
You can get rare cars comparatively cheaply if you don't see four doors as a disadvantage.
On offer in Paris in October are an Aston Martin Lagonda Series 1 from 1981 (EUR 25,000 to 45,000), a Bentley S1 Sports Saloon from 1959 (EUR 35,000 to 50,000) and a Maserati Quattroporte III Royale from 1989 (EUR 15,000 to 25,000).
A BMW M5 from 2000 (EUR 35,000 to 55,000) also fits perfectly into this category, even if it is a little younger.
Also bread-and-butter
In addition to super classics, exotics and rarities, there are also some former bread-and-butter cars for sale at Artcurial.
The spectrum ranges from the BMW Isetta 300 from 1959 (EUR 25,000 to 35,000) to the Citroën 2CV AZ PO from 1960 (EUR 8,000 to 12,000), the Fiat 500 L from 1969 (EUR 10,000 to 15,000) to the Morris Mini 850 Traveller from 1965 (EUR 25,000 to 30,000) or the VW Bus T1 from 1975 (EUR 40,000 to 50,000).
Many young cars
17 cars are not yet classic cars, i.e. not yet 30 years old. The youngest car is an Aston Martin DBS Superleggera from 2018 (EUR 225,000 to 275,000).
Also on offer are a Donkervoort D8 GTO from 2013 (EUR 150,000 to 200,000), a Tesla Roadster from 2012 (EUR 90,000 to 130,000), a Renault Mégane RS R26.R from 2009 (EUR 35,000 to 55,000) and a Lotus 340R from 2000 (EUR 55,000 to 65,000), to name just a few examples.
Artcurial can therefore offer a diverse portfolio of cars on October 22, 2023. Many vehicles have been estimated rather cautiously and could also be sold at significantly higher prices, while at the same time the high no-reserve percentage also provides opportunities for bargains.
Further information and many pictures can be found on the Artcurial website.
