On October 24, 2021, the French auction house Artcurial invites you to the des Champs-Elysées in Paris to auction 97 cars with an average age of 48 years. The total value amounts to around EUR 8.5 million, so each car is expected to fetch around EUR 88,000. Almost half of the cars will be offered without a reserve price, so some bidders can hope for a bargain.
Citroën ahead of Mercedes
39 brands competed for the favor of the bidders, with Citroën (15 cars), Mercedes-Benz (11) and Jaguar and Alfa Romeo (7 each) taking the lion's share.
All other brands are represented with a maximum of a handful of vehicles, exotic suppliers such as Alvis, Buick, Hobbycar, Matra-Bonnet, Salmson or Talbot with only one car.
Some French plastic
French sports car manufacturers liked to choose plastic as the material for their bodies, and Matra-Bonnet was no exception.
The Djet V on offer is the 25th car of this type built and has a well-known history. Chassis MB8-10025 is now expected to cost EUR 32,000 to 48,000.
The Dinalpin A110 1100 VA from 1970 is not entirely French, as it was built in Mexico. Many were not built, and they corresponded to the French model in most respects. EUR 35,000 to 55,000 has been set for this rarity.
The rear-engined sports cars from Renault-Alpine also had plastic bodies; Artcurial offers an A310 V6 from 1984 and an A610 from 1991.
Only parts of the body of the R5 Turbo were made of plastic. A series 2 version will go under the hammer for EUR 55,000 to 75,000.
Fast and rare rally cars
The most expensive car in the auction will not be a Maserati or Ferrari, but a Subaru. Of course, this is not an off-the-peg Impreza, but the Prodrive Werksagen, which was driven by Ari Vatanen, Colin McRae and Richard Burns, among others.
Chassis 93-004 is one of the first Group A works cars and is expected to be correspondingly expensive with an estimated value of EUR 450,000 to 650,000.
However, there are also cheaper offers on Artcurial if someone is looking for a rare rally car.
A Group B version of the Citroën BX 4TC Evolution from 1986 is on offer for EUR 250,000 to 350,000.
And for EUR 130,000 to 190,000 you can buy the Japanese counterpart called Nissan 240 RS Berline Groupe B from 1986.
An Alpine A110 from 1973 is worth EUR 220,000 bus 280,000, even though the car was initially mainly used in training in Group 4 configuration with chassis 18372. Nevertheless, the history of this car makes very exciting reading.
Special rarities
Not everyone is probably familiar with the Hobbycar B612. It is an all-terrain convertible with four seats and four wheels, which is powered by a Peugeot diesel 1.9-liter on land, but moves forward in the water via hydrojets.
Only around 60 of these vehicles were built, the car on offer from 2002 is said to cost EUR 30,000 to 40,000.
Also rare is the Talbot T14 America Barquette from 1958, which is an interesting reconstruction reminiscent of the cars that raced at Le Mans. The estimate here was EUR 80,000 to 110,000.
The De Dion Bouton Vis-à-Vis Type L recarrossé en cabriolet 2 places from 1902 has a somewhat unwieldy name. This is due to the fact that the bodywork was changed once. Now this project certainly requires a very enthusiastic new owner, who should invest around EUR 30,000 to 50,000 for the restoration base.
The 1969 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow converted into a station wagon, which Artcurial has set at EUR 120,000 to 150,000, is also likely to be quite rare.
Some super classics
Those who see classic cars as an investment opportunity are often drawn to the super classics, the so-called "blue chip" classic cars.
Artcurial can offer some of them, such as a 1967 Aston Martin DB6, which is listed in the catalog for EUR 170,000 to 210,000.
An Aston Martin DB4 from 1960, on the other hand, is expected to fetch EUR 350,000 to 450,000.
A 1953 Nash Healey Le Mans Coupé also belongs in this category and was estimated at EUR 70,000 to 90,000.
A Citroën SM from 1971 is already available for EUR 20,000 to 30,000, while a Mercedes-Benz 280 SL from 1968 is expected to fetch EUR 70,000 to 100,000.
A Jaguar XK 120 DHC from 1953 is expected to find a new owner for EUR 80,000 to 120,000, an AC Ace Roadster from 1959 for EUR 260,000 to 340,000.
A Facel Vega HK500 from 1959 was valued at EUR 120,000 to 150,000, a Lamborghini Espda from 1975 at EUR 90,000 to 130,000.
Everyday cars from back then
Artcurial has no shortage of cars that were still regularly seen on our roads a few decades ago.
Examples include a Fiat 500 L from 1971, a Citroën Vis Super E from 1983 and a Peugeot 304 C Berline from 1957.
For people who like much younger cars, the Citroën C6 V6 HDI 240 Exclusive from 2012 could be an option.
More information on the individual cars and lots of photos can be found on the Artcurial website.
