As usual, the auction in the halls of Rétromobile 2025 will once again be organized by Artcurial. On February 7 and 8, the French company will auction a total of 125 automobiles with a total value of 30 to 40 million euros. Almost half of them will be offered without a reserve price.
Among the lots without a financial safety net is also the most expensive of the auction: one of only 93 Ferrari 275 GTBs built with a light-alloy body, which has been estimated at two to three million euros. An "ordinary" example made of sheet steel is expected to be the second most expensive car in the auction at 2.2 to 2.6 million.
Gray in gray
Interestingly, red is not the dominant paint color among the Italian thoroughbreds. Most of the 14 in the auction catalog are in silver or grey tones. In addition to the steel 275 (whose greenish silver officially runs as sky blue), a 365 GT 2+2, a 250 GT/L, a 365 GTB/4, a 365 GTC/4 and a 550 Maranello each as a Barchetta and Coupé also wear quite colorless colors.
The latter comes from the previous ownership of Michael Schumacher, who drove the press car from 1996 to 2003 and then sold it to Japan. 230,000 to 320,000 euros are expected for the coupé in "Argento Nürburgring", which has only covered around 10,000 km.
Germany dominates
With 16 vehicles on offer at Artcurial, only Porsche has a larger selection than Ferrari. The Stuttgart assortment ranges from the 1952 356 Coupé (380,000-460,000 euros) to the 1995 911 Carrera RS (250,000-300,000 euros). In addition to a Porsche Carrera RS from 1972, which is expected to be the most expensive lot of its make at 400,000 to 500,000 euros, the 2000 GS Carrera 2 is also of interest at 370,000 to 450,000 euros.
Mercedes-Benz also made a major contribution to the German dominance with eleven lots. There is also a Mercedes 10/40/65 PS Sport from 1923, which is mistakenly listed as a Mercedes-Benz. With an estimate of 160,000 to 200,000 euros, it is the third most expensive vehicle with the three-pointed star after a 220 S Cabriolet (190,000-220,000 euros) and a 300 SL (1,300,000-1,600,000 euros).
England is also well represented, with five Bentley Continental with various Park Ward, H. J. Mulliner or Mulliner Park Ward bodies alone accounting for almost a third of the British range.
Lots of old, little young
In general, the cars on offer in Paris are relatively old, with an average age of 62 years. As many as 23 of the 125 were built before the Second World War; seven of them even before the First. With an approximate date of 1899, a Phébus Tricycle Spécial de Course is the oldest vehicle in the catalog. It is expected to fetch between 50,000 and 70,000 euros.
In contrast, there are just five cars from the 21st century, of which a McLaren Senna from 2019 is by far the youngest (and with an estimated price of 950,000 to 1,150,000 euros also the most expensive).
Fiat or Ferrari? Or Bugatti?
In general, however, the price level is unusually low. On average, a lot is expected to fetch just under 270,000 euros. Exactly 100 of the 125 cars on offer have a minimum estimated value below this amount; of these, 58 are below the 100,000 euro mark.
Artcurial has estimated a 1971 Fiat 850 Sport Coupé and a 1973 Citroën Méhari as the cheapest way to buy a car at auction in Paris. An estimate of 12,000 to 15,000 euros is given for both - with no reserve price in each case.
Will the Ferrari 275 be able to maintain the double lead? A Bugatti 51 Grand Prix, which was once used by the factory, has the best chance of challenging the two Italians for the top spot as the most expensive car.
