One of the most famous automobiles, the Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic from 1936, was voted Best of Show at the Arizona Concours d'Elegance last Sunday.
It has already been voted the most expensive car in the world twice (in 1971 and 2010). The car is a handcrafted work of art, with pronounced front fenders and a narrow aluminum body. Both fenders and body are embossed with a series of rivets. The vehicle is owned by Peter and Merle Mullen and Rob and Melanie Walton and is normally on display at the Mullen Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California.
90 vehicles were presented at the Arizona Concours d'Elegance in 17 different categories. The Best of Show was then chosen from the group winners. In addition to the Bugatti, three other cars were shortlisted:
- Lagonda LG45 Rapid sport tourer (1937)
- Ferrari 250 Europa coupe with bodywork by Vignale (1955)
- Marmon V16 convertible coupe (1933)
The Atlantic won in the class "Vehicles by Ettore and Jean Bugatti" in which eight spectacular Bugatti creations, including three historic 1920s Grand Prix cars, competed.
The Concours took place under threatening clouds, but fortunately it remained dry throughout the day. The spectators were unimpressed by the forecast rain and enjoyed the exhibition in the courtyard of the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix.
On Monday, some Concours participants gathered for a short drive, the Arizona Tour d'Elegance, which led to a public display of the cars at the South Canal Bringe in Scottsdale.
At the end of the Concours d'Elegance, the date for next year was also announced: January 14, 2018 will be the 5th Arizona Concours d'Elegance.
