On June 4, 2016, the "Fantastic Plastic" will take place at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne. Once again this year, vehicles from five decades are expected at this meeting of plastic cars, which promises an interesting cross-section of the plastic era in automotive engineering.
Forgotten plastic cars
In the 1950s, a new material began to revolutionize vehicle production. GRP or fiberglass made it possible to manufacture plastic car bodies at low cost. The new material was mainly used for the production of sports cars, but limousines and small vehicles were also produced. In most cases, the companies left it at building the bodywork out of plastic, but the more determined like Lotus and Rochdale went one step further and built entire vehicles out of plastic.
However, plastic bodies were not only popular with suppliers of inexpensive vehicles; luxury sports car manufacturers such as Jensen or large companies such as BMW or Ferrari also used plastic for the bodies of certain models. The Jensen C-V8, the BMW M1 and the Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina are just a few examples. In general, the list of plastic cars is long, but many of these vehicles have long since disappeared from our roads, and most of them have been forgotten.
Lucerne becomes a metropolis of plastics
On June 4, 2016, cars from the BMW M1 to the Enzmann 506, from the Alpine A110 to the Jensen C-V8, from the Ferrari 308 GTB to the Renault Espace will come together in Lucerne for the fourth time. Limousines, sports cars, specials, all are welcome, the only requirement is a plastic body.
Lucerne is becoming a plastics metropolis and is set to showcase a variety of vehicles rarely seen in a small space. This year, vehicles from Lotus and Alpine-Renault will be particularly honored.
The rest of the program includes a visit to the car collection at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, followed by a trip to Einsiedeln, where a special program awaits the participants, followed by a barbecue. The program, which has a few surprises in store for all participants, concludes with the award ceremony at the Museum of Transport in Lucerne.
