Summary
The Panhard CD with an engine of just 701 cm3 reached a speed of almost 205 km/h at Le Mans, which was only possible thanks to top aerodynamic performance. In fact, the drag coefficient of the racing cars was just 0.17, while the production version, which could be purchased between 1962 and 1965, had a drag coefficient of 0.22. Due to the high price, not even 200 of these cars found customers, but today they are sought-after classics and surprise with a cozy interior and good driving characteristics. This report portrays an example from 1964 and shows the car in many historical pictures and in the sales brochure. A sound sample is also included.

Preview (beginning of the article)
In 1962, Panhard presented a sports car at the Paris Motor Show which, with a two-cylinder engine in race trim, was capable of speeds of over 200 km/h and consumed just 3.7 liters of premium petrol per 100 km at a constant 70 km/h. This was thanks to its record-breaking aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight construction. And this was thanks to record-breaking aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight construction. The miracle car was called the Panhard CD and owed its life to two men, Charles Deutsch, whose initials can be found in the model designation, and René Bonnet, who had run the D.B. company together with Deutsch for many years. Deutsch-Bonnet were responsible for many Le Mans class winners and some impressive sports cars, many of which were based on Panhard technology. Bonnet, however, wanted more powerful and larger engines, which he got from Renault, so they parted ways. Deutsch found shelter at Panhard, together with a sports car that had already been fully developed.
