Art Deco has influenced automobile design like no other art style before or since. Automobiles created during the Art Deco period have rightly been described as "rolling works of art" or "sensual steel". This article looks back at the decorative art of coachbuilding and its typical features.
Panhard & Levassor is one of those brand names that have been indelibly etched into the first pages of automotive history. Already active in woodworking machinery and carriage construction before the advent of the automobile, the step into the new industry was relatively obvious for this company. The "Levassor" eventually fell away. In the mid-1940s, the Panhard company launched its first post-war model, the Panhard Dyna. Depending on their top speed, these vehicles were called Dyna 110, Dyna 120 or Dyna 130. This first generation was followed by a second generation, introduced by the '54' model, and even a third, in which the vehicles were called "PL 17". Aerodynamic finesse and an advanced design combined with a high level of comfort, good space and low prices made the vehicles a success. Only Citroën showed no real interest, which meant the end of the series. This report focuses on the early history of the Panhard Dyna. Later vehicles are only briefly mentioned. The article is supplemented by many historical illustrations and extensive sales brochures.
In France, too, promising sports car projects were repeatedly created, testifying to the enthusiasm and ingenuity of enterprising designers. One of these sports cars was the Sera-Panhard, which was presented in 1959 and could have had a chance with its sleek convertible body and good driving performance. But (once again) things turned out differently. This vehicle report looks back to the 1950s, tells the story of the Sera-Panhard and shows it in historical images and in the sales literature of the time.
After the Second World War, Panhard became famous above all for its ingenious small cars with air-cooled 2-cylinder boxer engines. Le Mans is less likely to spring to mind. However, the Panhard CD took 16th place overall in 1962 and won the class up to 850 cm3. The company wanted to capitalize on this success and produced a road-going sports car with a plastic body. This report describes the history of this exceptional vehicle in detail and shows it in many historical pictures, two brochures and contemporary press documents.
The predominant car on the roads of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the early 1960s was the Volkswagen Beetle. Over the years, the Wolfsburg-based company had perfected it and made it better and more reliable step by step. However, a circle of competitors formed around Wolfsburg that were superior to the Beetle in terms of comfort, space, driving performance and economy ... and still lost out in the local market. This report characterizes the generation of thousands using the examples of the Austin Mini Cooper, DKW F12, Fiat 850, Ford Anglia, Morris 1100, Opel Kadett, Panhard PL17, Renault R8 and Simca 1000. The article is illustrated with over 120 archive photos and over a dozen original sales brochures.
In 1964, two sports cars competed at Le Mans that were far ahead of their time in terms of aerodynamics. Despite having less than 100 hp, the CD Panhard LM64 ran at over 220 km/h on the Hunaudières straight. However, the greatest progress was hidden on the underside of the car. This episode of the series "Technology in racing cars" looks at the special features of this plastic-bodied racing car.
The Panhard CD with an engine of just 701 cm3 reached a speed of almost 205 km/h at Le Mans, which was only possible thanks to top aerodynamic performance. In fact, the drag coefficient of the racing cars was just 0.17, while the production version, which could be purchased between 1962 and 1965, had a drag coefficient of 0.22. Due to the high price, not even 200 of these cars found customers, but today they are sought-after classics and surprise with a cozy interior and good driving characteristics. This report portrays an example from 1964 and shows the car in many historical pictures and in the sales brochure. A sound sample is also included.
The Panhard 24 CT was the last series that Panhard brought onto the market before the end of the brand. Equipped with the technology of the PL 17 series, which was produced in parallel, the 24 impressed with its modern design and innovative details. However, it could not prevent the demise of the brand, despite several variants being built. This report, richly illustrated with historical and current images, looks at the history and development of the Panhard 24, supplemented by no fewer than seven sales brochures from the time.
The Panhard (PL) 17 transported six people, reached top speeds of up to 145 km/h depending on the version and all this with an air-cooled two-cylinder engine and a displacement of less than 900 cm3. It even excelled in rallying. It is worth taking a look back at this car from a long-forgotten brand.
