On September 15, 2024, the "Historische Verkehrsschau" association will be holding its popular public event for the 24th time.
The location in the Rheinpark St. Margrethen shopping center is close to the border with Austria and Germany and is very popular with visitors and participants.
Under the motto: "Wheels that move the world", various classic car, youngster and brand clubs and their friends of old motorcycles, tractors and trucks are expected.
But how did the Historic Traffic Show come about in the first place?
It all began in the fall/winter of 1994/1995, when the historic SBB goods shed at the port of Rorschach was given a new lease of life. The disused shed became the "Alte Garage" museum - a fascinating place for vintage cars, motorcycles and automobiles with over 150 objects. The first floor, carefully renovated and equipped with over 1000 square meters of exhibition space, provided enough room for the first special exhibition, which opened in spring 1995 under the motto "When wheels learned to walk". This exhibition and the spring and fall meetings in front of the museum laid the foundation for the Historical Transport Show.
Although the "Alte Garage" closed its doors for good in October 2004 and the collection was dissolved, the idea lived on. At Altenrhein Airport, in cooperation with the Aviation Museum, a new meeting place for classic and vintage car enthusiasts was created.
Many vehicles and a large audience
With up to 2,500 vehicles of various types and depending on the weather, the motor show quickly became a highlight in the calendar of many enthusiasts. The proximity to the border triangle also attracted friends of historic vehicles from Germany and Austria, and the Swiss National Day of Prayer coincidentally became the annual meeting date.
Even when space at the airport became scarce, the tradition found a new home in the nearby Rheinpark shopping center. The event is still held there today. Early on, the organizers of the traffic show had the next generation in mind and offered young people and their youngtimers a platform. An impressive variety of vehicles can be found at the Historische Verkehrsschau - anything with wheels and a story to tell is welcome.
30 years of enjoying oldies on wheels in today's fast-paced world is already worthy of a veteran's entry. All we need now is a little luck with the weather for the anniversary edition ...
