Renault Germany is celebrating its 110th birthday this year. In 1907, Louis Renault ventured across the Rhine and founded the "Renault Frères Automobil Aktiengesellschaft" in Berlin, Renault's first subsidiary abroad. Over the past 110 years, more than seven million Renaults have been sold in Germany and around 2.4 million of them are still on German roads today.
Louis Renault was fascinated by technology and mechanics from an early age. According to Renault, a visit to the newly built Eiffel Tower in 1989 inspired him to set up his own company. In 1899, he founded the "Société Renault Frères" together with his brothers. He was one of the great pioneers of his time and often lent a hand himself. The company quickly gained a foothold in France and developed so well that Mr. Renault decided to expand into Germany in 1907.
The first foreign subsidiary, "Renault Frères Automobil Aktiengesellschaft", was founded in Germany with a capital of 400,000 Reichsmarks. Renault set up shop directly on the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin-Mitte. The luxury limousines that Renault brought onto the market left little to be desired and created a good starting position for the company, enabling it to survive the turbulent years at the beginning of the 20th century. The company headquarters were relocated to Frankfurt, from where vehicles such as the Nerva Grand Sport and Suprastella made headlines in the 1920s and 1930s.
After the Second World War, a new start was made under the name "Renault Automobilgesellschaft für Deutschland GmbH". The growing demand and motorization benefited Renault and with the Renault 4 CV, the Dauphine and the Renault 4 and 5, Renault created icons that everyone still knows today. In the eighties and nineties, the Espace, Twingo, Scénic and Kangoo models were developed, which helped shape the German roadscape.
Today, Renault Germany is the strongest foreign car manufacturer on the German market and also the strongest manufacturer of purely battery-powered vehicles. The Renault Zoe is the best-selling electric car in Germany and around one in four electric vehicles on German roads is a Renault.
We wish Renault a very happy birthday!
