But before it, Ford's Model T had already passed the 15 million mark, and in modern times the Toyota Corolla, VW Golf and Ford's F-series even managed to reach over 30 million, although they were not the only people's cars to do so. The first Golf finally brought VW a step away from the Beetle monoculture and laid the foundation for a successful model whose triumphal march continues to this day. The 1974 test report explains what made the Golf so exceptional.
Even before the start of production, newspapers and magazines were able to drive the first VW Golf in 1974, including the magazine 'hobby'. The editors were enthusiastic, even if they would have liked a little more noise comfort and a few small improvements. This article reproduces the original wording of the test report and shows the early Golf in many illustrations.
Audi had developed a remarkable dynamic at the end of the 1960s. Under chief developer Ludwig Krauss, the basic elements that would one day save VW from ruin were created in Ingolstadt. The bottom end of the VW retread was the VW Polo in 1975, which was also a child of Audi development and initially nothing more than a slimmed-down Audi 50.
In its very first year, the VW Golf became the best-selling car in Germany. Looking back, it must be said that the transition from the Beetle to the Golf was smoother than expected. The 1975 test takes a close look at the Golf LS.
Everyone knows it, it became the progenitor of a new class of car, the VW Golf GTI, developed and produced by the Volkswagen company, which until shortly before was known mainly as the builder of the VW Beetle and a few less successful successors. The GTI was able to keep up with many a sports car that was several times more expensive and could easily be used in everyday life. This made it a trendsetter, and its imitators have continued into the modern era.
