When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, the first European production sports car with a turbocharger, in 1974, the signs on the horizon looked bad with the energy crisis and fears of inflation. But 500 planned units soon turned into thousands and even tens of thousands to date. Eight generations have been built to date, this report compares them and shows the air-cooled ancestors in particular in over 200 pictures.
Car customization was very popular in the 1980s; discerning sports car customers did not want an off-the-peg car. Companies such as Rinspeed offered a high degree of customization and often also vehicle versions that were not available from the manufacturer. With the Rinspeed Porsche 969 Turbo, Frank M. Rinderknecht even succeeded in creating a small "series", as twelve of these coupés with flanks reminiscent of the Testarossa were produced. The Porsche 924 and 944 models were always somewhat overshadowed by the iconic 911, but in 1985 the Zuffenhausen-based manufacturer set about creating a convincing alternative to the 911. The Porsche 944 Turbo with 220 hp could do many things better than the original 911, but also cost the same. In 1965, Porsche abandoned the Cabriolet for the time being. It would be 17 years before it was possible to buy a completely open 911 for the first time. But only with the naturally aspirated engine - turbo fans had to wait even longer, even though the 1981 prototype still had a turbocharger. It was not until 1987 that the factory finally delivered the open Turbo to customers. The Carrera 3.2 Speedster from 1989 is one of the rarities in the Porsche 911 line of ancestors. It was only built for a few months and the number of units was correspondingly small. And it looked very different from the other vehicles from Zuffenhausen. As a result, it proved to be very valuable. If you wanted to buy a Porsche 944 Turbo as a convertible, you had to wait until the last year of production. That's why the open-top 944 Turbo remained rare and still is today. In the spring of 1991, Porsche presented the RS version of the 964 at the Geneva Motor Show, a weight-optimized version without luxury, but with a little more power. It was a real driver's car that could also master a trip to the shopping center, but felt much more at home on the race track.
