At the time, the American importers Max Hoffmann and John von Neumann were looking for an affordable entry-level model that would be lighter and sportier than the normal models, which were obviously not easy to sell. Porsche supplied a slimmed-down 356 variant with a low windshield (the car was only 116 cm high), a thin fabric top and minimal comfort. The 70 hp engine had little trouble with the 730 kg weight and the car became a sales hit from 1954 as the 540 Speedster. Reutter built the bodies, but was replaced by Drauz in 1958 when the Convertible D replaced the Speedster.
