When Porsche launched the 911 Turbo, the first European production sports car with a turbocharger, in 1974, the signs on the horizon looked bad with the energy crisis and fears of inflation. But 500 planned units soon turned into thousands and even tens of thousands to date. Eight generations have been built to date, this report compares them and shows the air-cooled ancestors in particular in over 200 pictures.
The Carrera 3.2 Speedster from 1989 is one of the rarities in the Porsche 911 line of ancestors. It was only built for a few months and the number of units was correspondingly small. And it looked very different from the other vehicles from Zuffenhausen. As a result, it proved to be very valuable. This report, which also looks back at its predecessors, clarifies whether the car meets the high expectations from the driver's point of view.
In 1965, Porsche abandoned the Cabriolet for the time being. It would be 17 years before it was possible to buy a completely open 911 for the first time. But only with the naturally aspirated engine - turbo fans had to wait even longer, even though the 1981 prototype still had a turbocharger. It was not until 1987 that the factory finally delivered the open Turbo to customers. This driving report with many current and historical photos attempts to clarify whether the long wait was worth it.
It came as a surprise, as Porsche had hardly changed anything visually on the 911 for over 15 years. However, it was not only the appearance that was revised, but above all the technology. The 964 had all-wheel drive, making it significantly safer to drive than its predecessors. Nevertheless, with its good features, it did not automatically become a beloved youngtimer (and soon a classic car), but was somewhat overshadowed by its predecessor (G-model) and successor (993). As a successor to the Porsche 944 Turbo in the Porsche Cup, the Zuffenhausen-based company developed a Cup version of the new 964 Carrera 2 in 1989. Weight reductions and technical optimizations made the coupé more suitable for racing without losing its road traffic approval. The 964 Carrera 2 Cup dominated the championship for several years until it was replaced by the 993. In the spring of 1991, Porsche presented the RS version of the 964 at the Geneva Motor Show, a weight-optimized version without luxury, but with a little more power. It was a real driver's car that could also master a trip to the shopping center, but felt much more at home on the race track.
