The Ford Mustang is probably the best-known American sports car, even though it is not actually a sports car at all. It is repeatedly voted the most popular American classic and every child knows it. In 2014, the series Mustang will be 50 years old and this will be celebrated with the sixth edition, reason enough to take a closer look at the previous five generations. This report shows all Mustang models to date, describes special features and shows the vehicles in many pictures.
The Ford Mustang was not first presented in New York in 1964, but in Bern, albeit only a few hours before the official launch in the USA. The early Bern Mustang has survived! The Mustang marked the beginning of a particularly successful chapter in Ford history. This driving report shows the world premiere Mustang in current and historical footage.
Almost three million Ford Mustangs were built between 1963 and 1973 - the success of this US sports car could hardly be better characterized. The concept of building a pretty sports car for the whole family, albeit a small one, was a complete success, despite rustic technology, but not least thanks to low prices and massive performance. This report looks at the history of the US classic Mustang and shows a vehicle from 1965 in detail, supplemented by brochures, press reports, technical specifications (27 pages) and lots of contemporary images.
The Ford Mustang was still brand new when Scott Bailey, the publisher of the "Automobile Quarterly" book series, asked Carrozzeria Bertone to build a special Mustang and sent a brand new production Mustang to Italy for this purpose. The result, the hundredth special Bertone body designed by the young Giugaro, was both visually and technically impressive. Stephen F. Wilder from Road & Track was one of the few people allowed to test drive the car. His impressions and driving impressions, published in the January 1966 issue, are reproduced here in excerpts, supplemented by press photos from the time.
It was the modifications that Carroll Shelby made to the Ford Mustang that turned the pony car into a serious competitor on the racetrack. The Shelby Mustang GT 350 and even more so the GT 350R were the cars to beat on America's racetracks. A few examples found their way to Europe, one of which was bought by the famous Swiss racing driver Herbert Müller, who drove it to the race track, but also used it in hill climb and circuit racing. This article describes the special R models and Herbert Müller's car, supplemented by memories of his son and illustrated with current and historical photos.
In 1966, there were already 2,500 Ford Mustangs on German roads, and in Switzerland as many as 1,000 buyers had opted for one. At that time, 600,000 Mustangs were built per year, a real success in the millions. Reason enough for Heinz Kranz to take a closer look at and analyze this success. This analysis was combined with a test drive, which revealed both positive and negative aspects.
Two Ford Mustangs have achieved special film honors and become legendary. Eleanor and "Bullitt", the car driven by Frank Bullitt in the movie of the same name. It's no wonder that these cars are reproduced time and again. But the Ford Mustang Fastback with a 6.4-liter engine was a very interesting car even without this legendary status. With the Ford Mustang Mach I from 1969 to 1973, Ford stood up to GM and Chrysler and presented the competition with visually attractive and powerful sports models. The sales success proves that customers appreciated this, while test reports from the time were surprisingly loud in their criticism. It was no bigger than its siblings, the Ford Mustang Grande. But it was more comfortably equipped and remained comparatively rare. For some, it was the best Mustang ever. In 1969 and 1970, a total of around 36,000 Grande models were delivered, some of which received the largest possible engine with a displacement of 5.8 liters and 304 SAE horsepower. This meant that they were not only comfortable, but also fast. This report portrays a Grande model built in 1970 and shows it in modern and historical pictures.
With the third generation of the Mustang, Ford left the dark seventies behind. The wheelbase grew, the bodywork smoothed out and the engine power slowly rose back to pre-oil crisis levels. With the right accessories, the 225 hp of the most powerful production model was by no means the end of the line. Drive in a V8 convertible with retrofitted supercharger.
