Almost three million Ford Mustangs were built between 1963 and 1973 - the success of this US sports car could hardly be better characterized. The concept of building a pretty sports car for the whole family, albeit a small one, was a complete success, despite rustic technology, but not least thanks to low prices and massive performance. This report looks at the history of the US classic Mustang and shows a vehicle from 1965 in detail, supplemented by brochures, press reports, technical specifications (27 pages) and lots of contemporary images.

The Ford Mustang was still brand new when Scott Bailey, the publisher of the "Automobile Quarterly" book series, asked Carrozzeria Bertone to build a special Mustang and sent a brand new production Mustang to Italy for this purpose. The result, the hundredth special Bertone body designed by the young Giugaro, was both visually and technically impressive. Stephen F. Wilder from Road & Track was one of the few people allowed to test drive the car. His impressions and driving impressions, published in the January 1966 issue, are reproduced here in excerpts, supplemented by press photos from the time.
