On November 26, the auctioneer at the Oldtimer Galerie in Toffen will once again raise the hammer and auction off 99 classic cars (in addition to a handful of newer cars and nine motorcycles). A visit to Toffen could be worthwhile, as the offer includes over 20 rarities that are not seen very often.
98 classic cars, the oldest of which is 94 years old, are vying for the favor of buyers. Not quite 10% of the vehicles on offer are from the pre-war period, the majority (73%) are post-war classic cars, the rest are youngtimers.
The average estimated price is a good CHF 35,000 or just under € 30,000. The entire portfolio represents an (estimated) value of CHF 3.3 to 3.7 million, or € 2.7 to 3.1 million.
All cars are below € 100,000, but the upper estimate for four cars exceeds CHF 100,000. After a first glance at the vehicle list, the estimated prices appear to have been set quite reasonably, but it remains to be seen whether the bidders will see it that way on November 26.
Adler Trumph Junior Sport, a rare and exceptionally pretty classic
The Adler Trumph Junior Sport from 1934 is certainly not one of the classics you see at every classic car rally. The pretty roadster has a 996 cm3 engine and delivers 25 hp to the front axle with its four cylinders. Over CHF 60,000 has been invested in the car over the last few years, the engine, gearbox and radiator have been overhauled and the interior restored. If you are not looking to set the fastest times in hillclimbs, but are instead looking for a rare pre-war sports car from German production, you could be in the right place here, especially as the estimated price of CHF 32,000 to 34,000 (€ 26,700 to 28,300) has been set at an attractive level.
Practical and extraordinary - Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier Sportswagon
Similar to a VW bus, Chevrolet also built a bus from 1961 to 1965 using the Chevrolet Corvair platform, which was called the Greenbrier Sportswagon. In America, this vehicle is likely to be encountered from time to time, as companies such as the Bell telephone company used the practical delivery van as an emergency vehicle, but in this country this Corvair variant is certainly one of the rarities. The model on offer, a nine-seater with a 2.4-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine, has Swiss vehicle documents, a restoration that has been started has not been completed and the body is ready for painting. With an estimated price of CHF 26,000 to 28,000 (€ 20,000 to 21,500), this car will certainly appeal to true fans of American rarities.
Three Jaguar E-Types
50 years of the E-Type were celebrated this year, and three of these sports car icons are at the "start" in Toffen: a V12 coupé from 1972, a V12 roadster from 1974 and a 3.8-litre roadster from 1963. The coupé is naturally the cheapest, with the two open-top versions in the CHF 85,000 to 115,000 (€ 70,800 to 95,800) range.
Inexpensive Italian exotics
The Maserati Ghibli is one of the most beautiful cars of the sixties, and in the SS version with a displacement of 4.9 liters also one of the fastest. A bordeaux red example from 1971 with 45,000 km, matching numbers and the same owner for the last 35 years is available in Toffen. The condition is described as good, the car was inspected in July 2011 (MFK), the estimated price is quoted at CHF 90,000 to 95,000 (€ 75,000 to 79,200), so one or two people might be squinting at their bank balance.
An even cheaper way to enjoy the Italian eight-cylinder sound is with a Maserati Kyalami from 1978. Originally acquired from De Tomaso, the coupé is on the lot list with an estimated price of CHF 38,000 to 42,000 (€ 31,700 to 35,000).
The Moretti convertible based on the Fiat 128 is probably even rarer than the two Maserati. Only a few vehicles were produced from 1969 onwards. The brown vehicle on offer was built in 1971 and is powered by a 55 hp 1100 engine; its condition is described as very good and well maintained. Estimated at CHF 22,000 to 24,000 (€ 18,300 to 20,000), the opportunity to bid for such a vehicle will not come again soon.
Two Borgward Isabella Coupé
Bidders will have the opportunity to bid twice for a Borgward Isabella Coupé from 1958. One vehicle (lot 1) is described as a restoration object or parts carrier and comes with Swiss vehicle documents. The estimated price was set at CHF 5,000 to 10,000 (€ 4,200 to 8,300). The second coupé (lot 47), which has been in the family for 40 years, is in a very good and well-kept general condition according to the auction catalog and is correspondingly more expensive.
Mercedes armada
No fewer than ten Mercedes from various periods and model series are on the bid list. Two Ponton limousines(180 and 190), two SLs from the 107 series (350 SL, 450 SL) and one of the rare 300 SEL 6.3 liters (see report ) can be bid on alongside other star carriers. And the increasingly attractive Mercedes 250 C Coupé, especially as it is a very early vehicle, could also appeal to some.
MG sports cars from over forty years ago
The MG delegation of five vehicles ranges from the MG M Type Midget from 1932 to the comparatively modern MG B Roadster from 1976. The MG show is rounded off with a TC, a TF and an A. The estimated prices for the individual vehicles in this quintet range from CHF 14,000 to 55,000 (€ 11,700 to 45,800).
Large and small Citroëns with front-wheel drive
Three Citroën 11s, three 2CVs and a DS invite you to explore French savoir vivre, with estimated prices for the comfortably sprung saloons ranging from CHF 8,000 (€ 6,700) to almost ten times that amount.
Many other rarities under the hammer
Studebaker Avanti, BSA Three Wheeler, Lancia Artena, Matra Sports M530 LX, Ford A Sport Coupé, Armstrong-Siddeley Hurricane 16 DHC, Daimler SP 250 Dart, BMW 502 A V8 or the Godefroy & Levêque Cycle-Car Super B2 from 1917 (oldest car on offer), the list of rarities could go on for some time.
But bidders can also raise their hands formore "popular" classics, from the BMW 635 CSi to the Ford Mustang, the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0, the Chevrolet Corvette, the Triumph TR 7 Convertible and the Porsche 911 and 928.
