It was the 25th auction that the classic car gallery has held on a November Saturday in a quarter of a century. The routine and experience developed over the years was evident on November 28, 2015. Despite the wintry cold, the large room was heated and the cars were ready for inspection long beforehand.

The auctioneer was able to start on time and completed the sale of the 116 vehicle lots as well as some automobilia and spare parts in less than four hours, so that the room was still quite full at the end.
Full house
Despite snowfall down to the lowlands, every seat was taken when the hammer fell on the first offer. And many more auction-goers crowded into the room to watch the first lots standing.

However, many people were also needed to ensure that there were always enough bidders for the wide range of items on offer. This worked well for many offers, but for some the bids dried up too early.
Overall, 47% of the lots were sold immediately, while 21% had to be knocked down under reserve, resulting in a sales quota of around 68%. 32% or 37 vehicles were not sold.
Stars in demand
The Mercedes-Benz brand was represented to an above-average extent at the auction in Toffen, with a total of 21 stars going under the hammer. Some of them were in exceptionally high demand, such as the 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupé, which sold for CHF 53,000 (EUR 48,624) before commission/surcharge, 12% above the estimate.

The 190 SL from 1961 was also knocked down at CHF 107,500 (Euro 98,624), eight percent above the estimate.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 from 1969 also fetched a high price, with the hammer falling at CHF 87,500 (EUR 80,275). However, it was also a particularly well-maintained example.

Only two Mercedes could not be sold, although there were still reservations about some of the star carriers that were sold.
Surprises
The surprise of the afternoon was probably the Jaguar 3.8 S from 1965, which was the subject of an exciting bidding war. The telephone buyer did not want to follow up and finally won the bid at CHF 26,000 (Euro 23,853), 37% above the median estimate.

The Spider Aerodinamica (popularly known as the rubber lip) is not exactly the most popular Alfa Romeo. However, the highest bidder could not resist the convertible from 1983 and offered CHF 11,000 (Euro 10,092), which was 29% more than the estimate. A commission/surcharge of 12% (incl. VAT) was then added.

And two more cars managed to exceed expectations, namely an Alfa Romeo GTV 6 2.5 from 1982 and the BMW 635 CSI from 1982.

Beloved and less appreciated limousines
A significant proportion of the cars on offer at Toffen were saloons. While real bidding battles developed for some of these, the bids for others remained low or too low. As expected, the 1973 Ford Escort 1300 L, a dog bone in stupendously good condition and gold-colored paintwork, was popular and was eventually knocked down for CHF 9000 or Euro 8257.

An extensively restored 1956 Opel Olympia Rekord, on the other hand, attracted much less interest, with bids stopping at CHF 15,000 (Euro 13,761) and restoration costs several times higher.

Little interest in pre-war vehicles
Pre-war vehicles had a hard time. Bids tended to be very low, and if they were accepted with reservations, there was still a clear gap to expectations. For example, no one wanted to go over CHF 50,000 (EUR 45,872) for the 1924 Chenard & Walcker, and bids for the 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Sports Tourer also stopped at around two thirds of the estimated value.

Some of the veterans did not even receive serious bids.
Paradise for bargain hunters
If you were flexible but really wanted an affordable classic, Toffen was the place to be. For CHF 1750 (Euro 1606) there was a beautiful Saab 99 GL, for CHF 5500 (Euro 5046) a beautiful and red (!) Mercedes-Benz 200 from 1982. At CHF 6500 (Euro 5963), an MG Midget 1500 from 1978 was a very good value for an English classic, but the Peugeot 504 Coupé with fuel injection from 1978 was also very reasonably priced at CHF 8500 (Euro 7798).

And these are just a few examples.
A conciliatory final spurt
Reinhard Schmidlin looked a little anxiously into the room when some of the most valuable vehicles were called up at the end. The most expensive vehicle, the 1973 Citroën SM Mylord, had already been auctioned in the middle, but had not been sold despite a bid of CHF 280,000.

The final highlight was the Maserati Indy 4.2 from 1970, which sold for CHF 92,500 (EUR 84,862) before commissions/surcharges to a proud new owner.

Compared to other recent auctions, Schmidlin can certainly be satisfied and it can be expected that his sales team will be able to renegotiate some of the reservations.
