Summary
The 54th International Motor Show in Geneva took place under less than optimistic auspices. The dying of the forest was on everyone's lips, new taxes made driving more expensive and new speed limits loomed. A few world firsts - Renault 25, Ferrari 288 GTO, Peugeot 205 GTI, etc. - did not hide the fact that refinements had been made to the various vehicle models, especially in the details. The focus was on aerodynamics, fuel savings and visual sportiness. This report looks back at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show and shows many of the new models in pictures.

Preview (beginning of the article)
Wider tires, more diesel engines, five gears, aerodynamic refinements, tuning parts and the harbinger of the CD player in the car - these were the hallmarks of the new generation of vehicle technology on show at the 54th Geneva International Motor Show from March 1 to 11 , 1984. There were also innovations, but above all improvements in detail. The mood was less than euphoric, with dark political clouds appearing in the previously cheerful automotive sky. Since 1982, Switzerland had already been on a path where noise and exhaust regulations were concerned. This had led to a certain thinning out of the market, as not every manufacturer wanted to build special models for Switzerland. As a result, some top-of-the-range models were not available in Switzerland at all or only with reduced performance. At the Geneva Motor Show, vehicles for the European market were shown alongside the Swissized versions.
