Summary
The 26th Geneva Motor Show opened its doors from March 8 to 18, 1956. 792 exhibitors from 10 countries presented the entire range of personal mobility products, from the smallest vehicle to the full-size bus. Among the premieres, the Renault Dauphine was the star, but there were many other innovations to discover on the many stands. This report describes the atmosphere and vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show in 1956 and shows them in over 110 historical and painstakingly restored illustrations.

1956 is the year in which the term "artificial intelligence" was coined and the films "Moby Dick" and "High Society" were shown for the first time. The years of the economic miracle brought work but also money to ever larger sections of the population, who in turn increasingly thirsted for mobility. Since the war, the Swiss alone had imported 336,150 automobiles worth almost two billion francs. With few exceptions, the small landlocked country had hardly any vehicle production of its own, and so Switzerland was simultaneously seen as a test market, but also as an attractive sales market thanks to the available funds. No wonder the density and diversity of the Swiss car market was unique, which naturally had a positive effect on the Geneva Motor Show.
