On April 16, 2023, Bonhams auctioned 94 cars and a boat as part of the 80th Goodwood Members' Meeting on Sunday. The cars were estimated at a total of over £10 million, with each car costing an average of £106,281. A third of the cars were offered without a minimum bid.
British-dominated offer
Around three quarters of the cars were British-made. 12 Aston Martin, 10 Jaguar, 8 Ford, 7 Bentley and 4 Austin-Healey and Lagonda were responsible for the strongest brand presence, broken only just by Ferrari (4) and Porsche (3).
On average, the cars were around 62 years old; the Ferrari sports cars were the exception here with an average age of 26 years.
Many exotic brands such as Elva, HRG, JBM, Jensen, Lanchester, Mosler, Stutz and Turner demonstrated the breadth of the range.
Not all brands were equally convincing. Of the 12 Aston Martins, 9 were sold, with an average bid of 92% of the median estimate.
All eight Fords were sold, although there was a high proportion of "no reserves", as the average bid was only 65% of expectations.
The Austin-Healey and Ferrari sports cars fared poorly, with only one of the four cars sold. Overall, the sales quota was 72%, i.e. 68 cars were sold immediately.
Bentley and Subaru most expensive
The ten most expensive cars in the auction showed just how wide the range was.
A 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Le Mans-Style Tourer came out on top, finding a new owner for £ 563,500 (EUR 631,120, CHF 625,485).
The 1999 Subaru Impreza WRC999, driven by Richard Burns and Robert Reid, also took second place in the 2000 season, taking part in the Monte Carlo Rally and winning a number of special stages. It was also entered in the Sanremo Rally. The new owner had to pay £ 448,500 (EUR 5,2,320, CHF 497,835) for the fully restored works car, which was slightly less than expected.
It was followed by a 1987 Aston Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack and a 1970 DB6, the latter of which sold for even more than the estimate.
In fifth place was one of the oldest cars in the auction, a 1913 Hispano-Suiza 3.0-Litre Type 20, which found its way into a new garage for £ 253,000 (EUR 283,360, CHF 280,830), well below the estimate.
A Porsche 911 S, a Cooper Chevrolet racing car, another Aston Martin DB6, a Porsche 993 Turbo and a 1961 Jaguar E-Type completed the top 10.
Eclectic variety
Bonhams' offerings at the Members' Meeting also showed a pleasing variety beyond the top 10, including some cars that are rarely seen at auction.
Want some examples? How about a 1954 Ford Zephyr Zodiac Saloon? After all, £12,650 had to be invested in it.
Once was the Triumph Stag Fastback Prototype from 1971, but in the end the model did not make it into series production. With a price of £53,475, the one-off was even cheaper than estimated.
The interesting HRG Le Mans Lightweight Sports from 1947 could not be sold. Bidding stopped at £ 130,000.
The only remaining WSM coupé based on the 1963 Austin-Healey Sprit fared no better, with the bid of £30,000 again not enough to sell the interesting road-legal racing car.
Also some super classics ...
Of course, some super classics also went under the hammer at Goodwood. However, they did not really make a good showing. Neither the Ferrari Testarossa from 1990 nor the Ferrari 512 BBi from 1982 could be sold.
Instead, the 1965 Maserati Mistral 3.7 found a new owner for £86,250 and most of the Jaguar XK and E-Type models as well as the Porsche 911 were also sold.
Among the rarities were an AC 428 Coupé from 1966 and a Jensen 541 from 1957, which sold for £59,800, while the Jensen fetched £32,200.
Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz were also represented with cars in this group.
... and racing cars
Of course, a good selection of racing cars was also part of an auction on a circuit.
Two Formula 1 cars were sold, even if not quite in line with expectations. Several other racing cars also made the cut.
A few surprises ...
The Bugatti Type 23 "Brescia Modifiée" project from 1923 recorded the biggest difference between the sale price and the estimated value.
Instead of £ 40,000 to £ 55,000, the still to be completed restoration found a new workshop for £ 113,850.
A Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III from 1963 was also sold well above the estimate. The buyer paid £ 54,050 for the car.
Three Aston Martins and the Alfa Romeo 6C 1500C Normal Tourer from 1928 also clearly outperformed their estimated values.
... and disappointments
However, some cars also passed into new hands for significantly less than expected.
For a Ford Consul Mk II 375 De Luxe Saloon, only £ 7130 had to be invested, while the rare Turner 950 Sports changed hands for just £ 12,650.
A 1974 Stutz Blackhawk Coupé and a 1962 MGA 1600 Coupé were also significantly cheaper than expected.
A 1971 Lancia Fulvia 1600 HF rally car also sold for just £20,700.
And for just £18,400 you could become the owner of a 1954 Bentley R-Type Saloon.
