The 69th Monterey Car Week on the west coast of the USA traditionally ended with the highlight, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2019, which has long since become one of the most important and exclusive concours events in the world. So exclusive that the organizer says you should dress comfortably but elegantly. A well-groomed appearance is desirable, as is a suitable hat.
Illustrious jury
The registered vehicles were divided into more than 20 classes and judged by the jury according to the criteria of style, technical condition, history and authenticity. Legends from automotive and racing history were also invited as honorary judges: Valentino Balboni, the legendary Lamborghini test driver was also present as well as the resourceful designer Gordon Murray or the former Formula 1 racing driver Jochen Mass, to name but a few.
Rare classics
Icons from Bugatti, Aston Martin, Talbot-Lago, Duesenberg and other rare classics that are rarely seen anywhere else in the world apart from Pebble Beach were among the nominees.
There was also a Ballot. This brand is probably only known to a few people today. It was founded in 1919 by Édouard Ballot and existed until 1932. Édouard Ballot once helped Ettore Bugatti develop his first engine. If you are interested in the history, you can find a book review with information on the history of the brand here.
Prizes/Awards
The most coveted prize, the gold medal so to speak, is of course the "Best of Show" every year, but the "Class Awards", the "Special Awards" and around 20 other prizes are also hotly contested. But of course everyone hopes for the overall victory for their automotive work of art.
The Bentley has won: Best of Show
This year, for the first time in the history of the Concours, a Bentley took the overall victory, just in time for the brand's 100th birthday. The "Best of Class" award actually went to the Bentley 8 Litre Gurney Nutting Sports Tourer built in 1931. The owner is Michael Kadoorie, a collector from Hong Kong who is also known as the founder and owner of the Quail Concours.
