The small cars of the sixties and seventies have an impressive motorsport history, and some enthusiasts make sure that this is not forgotten every year: regularity races have been held for 25 years, and from 2013 the Battle of the Dwarves became an official racing series and has been competing in races since then, including this year.
The starting field for the Prize of the City of Stuttgart is impressive. 33 vehicles with an engine capacity of up to 1300 cc compete in four categories - the Abarth Coppa Mille, the British Car Trophy, the NSU TT Trophy and the 1300 Histo Cup.
The Battle of the Dwarves has 127 active and passive members, 42 of whom have registered for the current season.
Start of the season at the Preis der Stadt Stuttgart
The first race of the Kampf der Zwerge season took place on the weekend of April 8-9, 2017. In high temperatures and with plenty of sunshine, the small cars started at the Hockenheimring as part of the Preis der Stadt Stuttgart.
At the same time, however, the Techno Classica took place in Essen, where the Battle of the Dwarves has been represented with a stand for years. The organizing team did not want to miss out on this under any circumstances and split up without further ado.
Minis on the podium
At the Hockenheimring, it was clear from the qualifying session on Saturday that the participants had worked hard on their racing cars over the winter. The Minis from the "British Car Trophy" generally set the tone, alongside them were some NSUs from the NSU TT Trophy at the front end of the field and in between there was also a Simca Rally II from the 1300 Histo Cup.
Two races were on the program on Sunday. In the first race, a quartet pulled away from the rest of the field early on. Nick, Berg and Wein on Mini and Wilde on Simca led the race.
In the end, the three Minis made it onto the winners' podium. Swiss driver Gregor Nick took first place in his Austin Mini Cooper.
Gregor Nick didn't let anyone get past him in the second race either; the Swiss driver took the lead of the field and stayed there. The bad luck of his competitors did not make it any harder for him - Berg dropped out of the race due to a collision on the second lap and Wein had to retire after a technical defect.
Wilde, however, managed to reduce Nick's lead in the second race, but was unable to overtake him. Gregor Nick was therefore able to climb to the top of the podium for a second time.
The dwarves' racing season continues on June 16 at the Nürburgring Classics.
