The young car company Autobianchi built the Spider Stellina for just two years, which enjoyed an exceptional position due to its design, as it was the first production vehicle with an Italian-made plastic body. Due to its high price, however, it found few buyers. This report tells the brief history of the Autobianchi Stellina and shows the convertible in archive photos.
The Autobianchi Primula was not the first front-wheel drive saloon, but the design by Fiat's chief designer Dante Giacosa is regarded as the technical blueprint for most front-wheel drive compact cars of the modern era. The Primula was particularly practical in the hatchback version, but offered no better use of space than competitor vehicles, as the magazine 'hobby' made clear in a test at the end of 1965. This article reproduces the original wording of the test report at the time and shows the car in many archive photos and in the sales literature of the time.
The Primula - sold in this country by Fiat and BMW dealers - was built by the Autobianchi company and was a saloon-combi hybrid in the best sense of the word. It had all the advantages of a "normal" car and offered almost as much storage space as a station wagon with just a few simple adjustments. This possibility, coupled with temperament and attractive equipment, made the Primula an ideal family car, as this historical test report explains.
In the mid-sixties, Fiat only offered rear-wheel drive. But BMC had shown with the Mini and its larger alternatives that front-wheel drive had considerable advantages. Instead of presenting a competitor to Fiat, Autobianchi was allowed to step into the breach in 1964. An innovative car was created, but remained below its potential on the market and is therefore very rare today. This report tells the story of the Autobianchi Primula and shows the car in historical and current images.
By the term "muscle car", author Engelbert Männer was not referring to a mid-range sedan with an over-powered American-style engine, but to the effort required to drive it. For as modern as the Autobianchi A 111 was in some respects - transverse engine, front-wheel drive - it was just as old-fashioned with its stiff steering and leaf springs all round. This historical test report explains why it was nevertheless more distinguished than the Fiat 124.
Driving performance, space and equipment like a big car; dimensions, running costs and driving pleasure like a small car - the Autobianchi A 112 was living proof that you didn't really need more than it. A few small imperfections were readily forgiven in the bustling little car. In this historical test report, even the otherwise so objective Paul Simsa becomes almost emotional.
Gone were the days in the seventies when hardly anyone drove small cars, because in the age of parking space shortages and second cars, short, agile cars with as little superfluous sheet metal as possible were in demand like never before. Especially if they were also a bit sporty. The four candidates in the 1974 comparison test - Fiat 128 Rally, Simca 1000 Rallye 2, Autobianchi A 112 Abarth and Mini 1275 GT - had to prove themselves both in everyday traffic and on the Hockenheimring.
At the beginning of the 1970s, Autobianchi added a performance-enhanced Abarth version to the standard version of the A 112, which, with its sporty war paint and more powerful engine, was also able to inspire sports car drivers. The magazine 'hobby' tested the lively little car and gave it a generally positive review. They were compact and really fast in the hands of talented drivers, the Innocenti and Autobianchi Minis. As the Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300 and Autobianchi A 112 Abarth, they drove directly into the middle class in terms of performance, but cost considerably less and ran circles around large limousines thanks to their small dimensions and sporty chassis. Even the magazine 'hobby' could not resist their charm. With the A112 Abarth, the car manufacturer Autobianchi, which operated under Fiat/Lancia control, launched a sporty small car that could give even much more powerful sports cars a hard time on narrow roads. In the city, the A112 was almost unbeatable anyway and it was so good that it was built largely unchanged for around 17 years. During these years, its fan base grew steadily, which is why the Italian small car is now a sought-after classic car.
