Abarth sports cars and touring cars were among the cars to beat in various championships over the years. Based on the Fiat 500, Carlo Abarth produced super-fast racing cars that were to be beaten on the track and that still thrill spectators at historic racing events today. But it all began back in 1949 with the 204A and then the aerodynamic 205A coupé, which serves as the starting point for this article and is presented in detail in the picture.
Even at its presentation at the Turin Motor Show, the Abarth 1100 Sport shone with its futuristic coupé bodywork by Ghia. 62 years later, it won its class at Pebble Beach after an extensive restoration. Now it is being auctioned off. This vehicle report traces the history of the small Abarth coupé and shows it in historical and current pictures.
What becomes apparent in its early phase was Abarth's ambition to be categorized as a "real" car manufacturer - something that would continue throughout the company's history until its sale to Fiat in 1972. Abarth operated, perhaps even more clearly than Ferrari, on three tracks: with racing cars, road-going racing cars and more comfort-oriented Gran Turismo cars. For this reason, there were a whole series of Abarth models in the 1950s that were not primarily built for motorsport purposes - such as our 208 A Boano Spider.
Between 1956 and 1964, Carlo Abarth built racing-oriented coupés based on the technology of the Fiat 600, but equipped with an independent and attractive GT body. At that time, these coupés had to be beaten in their class in motor racing, which only a few succeeded in doing in the long term. This report briefly outlines the history of the Fiat-Abarth Zagato coupé and looks at the technology and one example in particular, which raced at Le Mans in 1960/1961 and at the Targa Florio in 1967, supplemented by archive photos from the time.
With the Fiat-Abarth 850 TC, Carlo Abarth created an almost unbeatable weapon in touring car racing, as evidenced by countless championship titles and hundreds of victories. With the compact sports car, you could take the whole family on vacation and excel at hill climbs or on the circuit at the weekend, regardless of whether you had bought the car ready-built from the factory or built it yourself with Abarth conversion kits based on the Fiat 600/600D. This report shows a Fiat-Abarth 850 TC "Nürburgring" from 1963 and goes into the history of this lively little car, supplemented by sales brochures and sound samples.
The Abarth 1300 OT was built in around 50 units between 1965 and 1966 and dominated Division 1 of the GT World Championship in 1966 and 1967. Beneath the attractive fiberglass body, designed by Mario Colucci, are a Simca 1000 box-section frame, Fiat 850 suspension components and the twin-camshaft engine from Abarth. This article goes into the history of the 1300 Omologato Turismo and shows a vehicle from 1966 in detail, both visually and tonally, as well as on historical photo material and in the original sales brochure.
Between 1966 and 1971, Abarth produced the 124/1300 model, which combined the coupé body of the Fiat 850 with the engine of the 124 saloon. With 75 hp, the compact car offered very competitive driving performance, but this was also reflected in a self-confident price. This report portrays a Fiat-Abarth 124/1300 Series 2 and shows the various models in historical photographs.
In a good 20 years, Carlo Abarth built over 200 different types of car and his vehicles won over 7000 races. Reason enough to compare two of his successful models with a modern successor. A 595 essesse, a 1000 TCR (Berlina Corsa) and a 695 biposto competed against each other on the race track. Comfort, driving performance and suitability for everyday use in large quantities are fine things, no question about it. But why do sports cars increasingly have to sacrifice something crucial for their sake? Driving pleasure! From a practical point of view, the Abarth Scorpione with Fiat technology and Lombardi bodywork is a completely pointless car - and yet it still has a right to exist, as this historic test shows.
Based on the Lombardi Grand Prix, Carlo Abarth presented the Scorpione, which was available in various versions between 1968 and 1971. The magazine 'hobby' took a look at this small sports car and printed a dialog between the owner and a car journalist. This article reproduces the original wording of the report from 1970, illustrated with pictures from the time, some factory photos and the original brochure and data sheet.
Between 1968 and 1971, Francis Lombardi produced an attractively shaped coupé called the "850 Grand Prix", which was based on proven Fiat components, but was completely independent in terms of design. In addition to the 47 hp version, there were also more powerful versions from Abarth and OTAS. This vehicle report describes the brief history of the two-seater coupé and portrays an example from 1970, supplemented by sales brochures and technical documents.
Two seats, sleeping eyes, engine behind the crew - this is also how a Lamborghini Miura can be described. Or an Abarth Scorpione, which remained similarly exclusive. This was based on the Lombardi 850 Grand Prix, which in turn had the technology of the Fiat 850 under its body. With Abarth, it was allowed to have a little more, i.e. 1.3 liters of displacement and around 75 hp. Around 40 years ago, the World Rally Championship was contested with special Gran Turismo sports cars in the style of an Alpine-Renault, Lancia Fulvia or Fiat 124 Abarth. Those who wanted to be at the front of the field ensured the best possible conditions with a small series of at least 500 units. In those years, Fiat had acquired a taste for rallying and commissioned the newly acquired Abarth racing car manufacturer to upgrade the Fiat 124 Spider into a rally-winning vehicle. The result was the road-going version of the Fiat 124 Abarth Rally, an evolutionary vehicle with sporty characteristics. Around four decades later, Fiat once again presented an Abarth 124 Spider. This report will show whether the new model has anything in common with its rally ancestor.
Just over 1000 examples of the Fiat Abarth 124 Rallye were built between 1972 and 1974 and they actually served only one purpose, namely to enable Fiat to win rallies. It was only marginally successful in this, but as a "waste product", so to speak, an attractive road version was created for anyone who could afford a car costing around 20,000 francs/mark at the time.
