In 1929, the son of the president of the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) suggested organizing a race in the streets of the city. It seemed like a crazy idea at first, but the club and the then Prince Louis II liked it. A short time later, on April 14, 1929, the race became a reality and the first Grand Prix on the soil of the second smallest country in the world was launched. A field of 16 cars tackled the 100 laps and after just under four hours and an average speed of around 80 km/h, the first winner, William Grover-Williams, was waved off. 80 years later, in 2009, the race is twice as fast without the roads having changed significantly.
