If the spectators are hooting with excitement every time a BMW drives up the mountain, then you are most likely in Bavaria. And indeed, the Roßfeldhöhenring road is located in the extreme south-east of this very state, close to the famous winter sports resort of Berchtesgaden. This Alpine road is 16 km long, its steepest gradient is 13% and it climbs to an altitude of 1560 meters.
The first races were held on the interesting mountain course as early as 1958, and from 1961 the Rossfeld race was included in the European Mountain Championship and famous racing drivers such as Sepp Greger, Edgar Barth, Gerhard Mitter, Hans Herrmann, Rolf Stommelen and Johannes Ortner won the "International Alpine Mountain Prize Rossfeld".
The energy crisis put an end to the mountain prize in 1973, but in 2013, exactly forty years later, the tradition was resumed with a classic car mountain race.
Diverse starting field
Almost 150 vehicles took part in the mountain races for the "International Edelweiss Mountain Prize Roßfeld Berchtesgaden". And in contrast to many other events, there was an impressive variety of brands and vehicle types. In fact, there were hardly two of the same type, with an impressive 70 brands (or brand derivations) on the starter list.
The cars entered included a number of vehicles that are rarely seen at events, such as a Puch Imp 700 GT, a Thurner Stiletto A30, the only remaining BMW-Martini 700 Coupé, an Abarth 2300 Coupé and three representatives of the former Glas brand (1300 GT, S 1004 Coupé and Goggomobil). A whole series of rare Formula Vee monoposti were also spotted.
The pre-war fraction was also well represented with four Bugatti, several Riley, Lagonda and Alvis, an Austro Daimler, a Mercedes Benz SSK and other vehicles.
6 km and 700 meters difference in altitude
The course was around six kilometers long, with an average gradient of nine percent and an extreme gradient of 13 percent. Slow and fast passages, hairpin bends and serpentine track elements alternated and offered the driver plenty of entertainment.
"Goodwood on the mountain"
The organizers had set their sights high with the slogan "Goodwood on the Mountain", but they were able to meet expectations to a large extent. The Porsche and BMW factory museums opened their doors and sent a number of rarities to Berchtesgaden, including the BMW 700 RS, the Porsche Carrera 6 and the Porsche 908/03 Spyder.
In addition, matching service vehicles, race transporters, police cars, fire engines and ambulances and, last but not least, authentic decorations created a nostalgic atmosphere, even if there was still a lot of potential before the Goodwood standard was reached.
Enthusiastic audience
The spectators were offered a lot, starting with the vehicle acceptance on Friday in Berchtesgaden and then followed by three races each on Saturday and Sunday. The guests' physical well-being was also catered for, with several kiosks offering food and drink at the spectator points. The organizer reported around 6,000 paying visitors and considers this a success.
Anyone arriving in a car that was at least forty years old was able to drive up Roßfeldstrasse and park in the finish area, which made for a beautiful sight overall.
Röhrl lets it rip
Patron Walter Röhrl made sure that the spectators who had traveled to the event got their money's worth. For the first time since his triumph at the "Pikes Peak" hill climb, he was back at the wheel of the legendary Audi Sport Quattro S1 winning car and showed off his driving skills with the rear wheel off the ground in tight bends.
As soon as the former Audi works driver got out of the car, crowds of people immediately formed. The other racing legends, including Hans Herrmann, Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Jochen Mass and Karl Wendlinger, did not fare any better, but they certainly seemed to enjoy being in the crowd. At the wheel of their precious cars, most of which came from the factory museums of the major manufacturers, they also provided plenty of entertainment for the spectators along the route.
Ernst Piech, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, drove an Austro-Daimler ADR 6 from 1929 on the mountain.
Corvette as the most even
The Rossberg race was run according to a uniformity rule. Helmut Petrowitsch, driving a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette C1, was best at keeping the time difference to a minimum. With a total difference of 1.2 seconds, he was celebrated as the first winner of the modern era. Second place went to Albert Kröpfl in a 1958 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT DaCora, while third place went to Michael Hasch in a 1929 Ford A Speedster. 18 participants remained under the 10-second total difference in the final standings; only mechanical clocks were permitted.
Next year again
The event will be repeated in 2014. "In view of the overwhelming feedback, I firmly believe that the Edelweiss Bergpreis am Roßfeld will take place again in 2014," said initiator Joachim Althammer.
The organizers have noticed a few areas for improvement, such as the logistics with the buses. The fact that there was fog in the paddock was nobody's fault, but perhaps the weather will be kind to us in 2014.
