The World Rally Championship (FIA WRC) will be back in Germany in 2011. But before the summer returns to Hunsrück and the steepest vineyards in Europe along the Moselle and the romantic villages like Trittenheim are mixed with rally air, we take a look back at one of the most beautiful pre-programs of the WRC, the Classic Rally Germany: a starting field with 40 historic rally cars, many of which are world-famous originals!
Special vehicles at the start...
The Lancia Stratos in the famous Alitalia livery and the Lancia Delta Integrale in the typical Martini look were certainly the most impressive.
One highlight was certainly the original Kühne & Nagel Porsche 911 RS from 1974: this Porsche was found in 1990 in the north of Kenya by a transport company in a pitiful condition, but it was many years before the 911 came to Germany. Once the history had been researched, it took countless hours to restore it perfectly to its original condition in 1974. Even an original roof rack was found on which sand plates were mounted in case it got stuck in the mud (see photo gallery for photos).
Seeing and, above all, hearing the original Walter Röhrl Audi Sport Quattro from 1985 up close is certainly a very special opportunity for younger rally fans who have not yet been able to see these real rally cars live (see photo gallery for photos).
The French prototype called Jidé was particularly exotic. Designer Jacques Durand derived this prototype from the Alpine A110 and equipped with a 1600 Renault Gordini engine, this original vehicle by Jean Ragnotti was certainly a special feature:
